General questions on surfacetex textures

Been messing with terrains in the ME, Surface Edit on.

I wonder where the proper location of the textures addressed for terrain are, like in which GTP file. Seems as dds file in a surfacetex folder in each individual map?

When you select them in properties they point to a map related surfacetex folder, and some slots empty and missing?

example file town_03_aux.dds is mentioned in the editor but not in present my (un GTP-ed) surfacetex folder:

                                                         ====>  G:\1C Game Studios\IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles\data\graphics\LANDSCAPE_Rheinland_au\surfacetex

The .dds files are defined in the SurfaceTex file for each map as you assume. The SurfaceTex can be edited and you can add texture from different maps.

The following picture shows the content of my personal SurfaceTex file from the LANDSCAPE_Rheinland_au folder showing the paths to different other maps. This SurfaceTex file supports the more detailed map I'm going to share soon with the update of the Operation Oyster mission.

Needs some tidying up before I share it though...

Cheers

enlightening ... seems a lot of work to get that right ! Now where is that SurfaceTex - Editor from the above picture located?

Just found the town_03_aux.dds file in the arras GTP map, guess a general surfacetex folder would be the solution, with a pointer to it in each map.

Hey jollyjack, the SurfaceTex file is a text file that appears for every Surface.dat file and contains a list of all the textures used in that particular surface file. It links a certain number to a path. Theoretically, it can link to any file on your whole PC, but by default its root directory is the data folder, unless it starts with the drive letter. So there is absolutely no need to only use textures from one specific area: there is no reason not to use, let's say, Kuban textures in Rhineland.

In which gtp file those textures are located, well, your guess is as good as mine. There seems to be little structure to it. gtp files with lower numbers tend to have older content (in this case, textures), but that is not always the case.

IL2 is a better Cluedo game and should be renamed accordingly ...
