--[---MAILMAN---- Posted November 15, 2021 Posted November 15, 2021 (edited) In my Flight Operating Instructions For P-40B & P-40C as well as Pilot's Flight Operating Instructions P-40D & P-40E AIRPLANES, both manuals refer to different modes for the radio equipment. One selector switch position is RANGE (for receiving a homing signal from U.S. Airways Radio Range). Was there a similar system in place in the combat theater that was the equivalent of the U. S. Airways Radio Range homing signal that the P-40E-1 would use to navigate back to its base both for its export versions and USAAF versions? If so is there some means of implementing this into BoX? Thanks in advance for any information? Edited November 15, 2021 by --[---MAILMAN---- Spelling
1CGS LukeFF Posted November 15, 2021 1CGS Posted November 15, 2021 There was, but it was mostly a Pacific Theater thing. Typically, in Europe and the Med, the only planes using radio homing equipment were bombers and transports. There was also the Pipsqueak system, whereby a plane would emit a radio signal for a period of time while a homing station acquired a fix on their location and thus could get them pointed in the right direction. 1
--[---MAILMAN---- Posted November 16, 2021 Author Posted November 16, 2021 That is correct, but I chose not to mention the "PipSqueak" mode in the thread. I was just thinking out loud since the Bendix navigation equipment is available to all of the other current US fighters in BoX for navigating home whereas the P40E had the radio homing navigation. I have seen photographs (location unknown) of some of the later P-40 models, P-40N, with the Loop antennas behind the cut down fuselage behind the cockpit.
BlitzPig_EL Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 P-40N... A dream. The most numerous version, usable higher levels of manifold pressure... Bliss... 1
