Properly aiming with different types of guns and cannons

Are the gunsights useful only for the guns or also the for the cannons?

I assume that they have different ballistic and deflection. I'm wondering how the pilots did to aim for different types of guns or cannons.

When you activate the aiming help, does the little red cross correspond only to where the guns will hit or not? Or is there a way to get an aiming aid also for cannons?

I have not tried to test. It is more critical for wing mounted weapons. However in this sim you can only set convergance on range and not adjust for individual weapon. This means the game assumes the gun  and cannon deflection are set to meet the range you set. Cannon would be aimed higher as they drop more over distance than guns. You could test this out by setting your range to 500m then fly closet to your target say 250m and fire cannon. You might find you miss completely as the cannon shells should fly over the target.

So I guess its safe to assume the gun aming assist cross wil be where any weapon will hit. In an unloaded g condition not hard turning.

1. when using the aiming assist you ONLY hit the target if you put the red cross on the red circle in front of the plane

2. Cannons and machine guns have different settings.

When you view the convergence slider you see TWO colors... the one farthest from 0 is the machine gun, the shorter one is Cannons

its about 100 yards shorter for cannon

Dude, stop giving out bad information. There is one convergence setting for all weapons, be they cannons or machine guns. I don't what you're looking at, but the convergence setting works nothing like what you are saying here.

IF the ballistics are being modelled correct, do we really think that the 37mm on the airacobra is going to be synced right with the machine guns when we select 250 meters convergence?

Why wouldn't they?  Your ground crew adjusts the machine guns to converge at 250 metres in front of your nose then does the same with the cannon.  Sure they will follow very different vertical trajectories but they will arrive at the same point 250m away.     It is no different to adjusting a mortar to drop on an enemy tank then setting two anti-tank guns 10m on either side of the mortar to also hit that same tank.

I have seen mention in various spot about the bigger shells like the cobras 37mm and even german 30mm rounds as not being capable of matching the same range, ie short range..

That is possible but we were discussing 250m and I would be surprised if the 37mm could not do that.

I think it was on here, but i know one german pilot, hartmann or udet? who didnt trust or use the 30mm guns past 150
