Will the game ever add B-17, B-24, Lancasters and other bombers as AI?

The game really needs them, not just B-25's and A-20's

One can hope!

 

I'd love for them to look into ways of optimising/simplifying gunner AI, or whatever other obstacles there may be, so we could have bigger bomber formations without too big a performance impact. Whether they're B-17 or Heinkels is honestly less important to me than getting more appropriate numbers on screen. If we can't have more than 4-10 planes in a box, I'm not sure the B17's would really improve things.

Large aircraft with multiple crewstations take significantly longer to research and model to an acceptable standard than smaller airplanes. On top of that, the large CPU draw of bomber gunners probably needs to be resolved before we can have aircraft with half a dozen turrets on them

 

Of your list I feel like the easiest candidate would be the Lancaster, but that's a night bomber with no night fighters or night fighting mechanics to face it

Not any time soon.  See the hundreds of posts related to this subject of you want details.  I'll try to give you the short version here:

1. These large bombers are extremely expensive to model.

2. The performance hit of all of those gunners is excessive.

3. The game engine cannot currently handle large formations of bombers.  It really can't handle large formations of any plane.

4. All of the above is not a knock on the game.  It is a tactical air simulation and it does this very well.  Making it a strategic air simulation is a bridge too far, at least for now.

 

So no, the game does not really need them, as it is quite good at what it does.  If the game could be expanded to make it a strategic simulation- and that is much more than just building a plane - that would be very nice.  But right now that is not what this game is.

It would indeed be great to get those big bombers in the game one day.

However, we've been over it many times over the years and I don't see it happening any time soon.

 

I'm already glad to read that Jason is working on getting the B-25D flyable one day.

We can of course do larger bombers and all sims have limits on how many planes they can have in the sky. I'm really sick of people using this as an excuse for us not having larger bombers. The biggest reason is simply the time and effort it takes to build them. I've said this now many times. Can we have 1000 aircraft bomber streams? No. Can any other sim do this? No. Whether we have 1 or 10 or 100 large bombers in any given mission either as flyable or AI, they would be a welcome addition.
