A friend sent me this link......

Thought I'd share it in case folks didn't know about the site.

Some interesting ideas they had.

For the benefit of the more credulous (some people believe anything they see on the interwebs), almost everything on that website is fake...

Oh God that "aerial refuling" Spitfire...

On the other hand a couple of them actually looked pretty nice. Like the "P51 scoop" Spitfire.

"spit09.jpg...

The VTOLfire in 'mock-up', still without the tailrotor

Maybe the Germans stole that and put it on the Do-335? Every day you can learn something new on the interweb...

Well that was a good chuckle this morning. Thanks!

One of the better looking Spits I've seen, still not as good looking as a Mustang, but at least they tried to clean up that ugly airframe ?

I pity future generations trying to discern what is truth and what’s not. It’s hard enough now sometimes.

That mark felton video is no phony though. I wonder if his facts are right as far as the spitfire with the DB  engine having a superior performance; he is a great historian but some areas are just not his forte. I am still a bit mad at him, being a Benny Goodman fan it was tough seeing him call Glenn Miller the 'king of swing' on a video last week. Ugh.

I don’t think anyone thinks Miller was the king of swing. The GMB has to settle for being the Beatles of their era…. ?

I like the one with the ball turret.

Don't you go dissin' Glen Miller on my watch.

I have reasons, that will become clear when I can get to my computer after work.

.... except Mark Felton. Of all people! You would imagine a historian not to make such a mistake:

A great video otherwise.

A tragic end to a great musician. If you can stand rather corny movie musicals, check out Sun Valley Serenade and Orchestra Wives. Both feature some great Miller performances. SVS is the better of the two films.

She... she ain't pretty no more.

German paint and markings also look awful on non-German planes.

Likewise, captured German planes look a bit off with non-German paint/markings.

Without going too much into armchair psychology and sociology, I've always found it interesting how much a given nation's collective personality is imbued in their aircraft. This phenomenon is less noticeable to me before and after WWII. But many WWII planes seem to exude a specific national flavor. And it's jarringly apparent when anything's changed from what we've come to expect.

Case in point, when modern aircraft are painted with (likely) enemy colors for wargame exercises, it doesn't feel as discordant.

Example (the 'Tomcatsky'):

OK, back to Glenn Miller...  My father was a professional musician during the "swing era".   Before WW2 he played in one of the best bands in the Detroit area.  When he went into the Army Air Corps after Pearl Harbor, the Army of course took note of his profession and promptly placed him in one of the Army Air Corps bands. (He did qualify expert on the M1 Carbine, but he was better with a saxophone).

Here is a photo of his USAAF band, that was based at Rome, New York, Army Air Field, which was part of the Air Technical Services Command.

He is the dapper looking Sgt. in the first chair with his sax.  Anyway, about the Miller connection.  After Miller was lost, the members of his band got transferred all over the place, and several of them ended up playing with the unit my father was in.  My Dad remained the first chair musician though for the whole war.

Sadly, my Dad's younger brother, who was a top turret gunner on a B17 in the 8th. Air Force, was shot down by flak on his 24th. mission...

I grew up with Miller and Dorsey, and all the other Swing greats being played on the record player all the time at home.

Thanks for sharing BlitzPig, cool story indeed,  although sorry to hear about the loss of your uncle.

That's the really sad thing about war.  It's started by old men, and paid for by the blood of young men.
