Machine guns....

Thanks guys!

This is what I suspected.... so at 600m, these planes have their convergence about twice as far out as "history"?

The latest update has turned me into a huge Thunderbolt fan. I'm having more fun with a Thunderbolt career than any other in BoP. The M2's have a little more bite, true, but it's the escort that lets you climb to 10K. The turbo sings, and there's plenty of airspace below to dig into.

what they(p40,p51,p40 pilots) did in real life when they were close to target and without the right convergence? Did they cancel the attack and tried again or they tried to hit the target with just machine guns in one wing?

I'd hazard a guess that if convergence was set at the standard 250 - 300 yards, shooting at any range less than that would still pepper a fighter sized target. The old fallacy that a pilot would shoot around a target if it were too close just isn't possible. Possibly at long range where the bullet stream might be spread out too much, but not from the muzzle of one's own fighter to the set convergence down range.

Edit -

Just for the sake of discussion, I made this simple video. I think the close range burst was under two seconds. I had a hard time starting and stopping the stop watch on time to get an accurate number. Still, the Fw was shredded. My convergence is set to 300 yards as was the pipper. The tail shot was made at under two hundred  yards down to maybe 100 yards. Now that I've gotten used to the new dispersion of the .50s, they really are devastating.

An example - the second shot on the 110 at the time stamp is likely inside 50 yards.

Another example at extreme close range:

I played around with dialing back the convergence on the Mustang and Thunderbolt to 300m. Seems to be a bit more potent, especially with the Mustang. As it should be. The P-38 is surprisingly effective with just the four 0.50's where convergence isn't an issue.

With the Mustang, you can get in close. With the convergence set to the default 600m, your rounds wind up hitting the wings. With the convergence halved, you start hitting fuselage at the same range. The closer you get, the more damage the 0.50's cause.
