Something different

S!,

As I learn Photoshop, I took a crack at creating a replacement for the "custom_photo" found in each tank. This is very similar to what is floating around for individual planes. I essentially replaced the custom_photo with a small range chart. The chart is based on 4 & 5 mils when measuring distances through binoculars (nocs) & gun sights.

If you want to this, you can find it here: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/904425611253145620/905955127230365696/Tank_Range_3-custom_photo.dds

I recommend that if you choose to replace your custom_photo, make a back up it or rename the original file. You find the location of the custom_photo on your IL2 directory within the vehicle folder.

EX: Z:\Steam\steamapps\common\IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad\data\graphics\Vehicles

Very nicely done - thanks for sharing!

So the gun range is based on the side dimension?

The short answer is yes. The range is based on side profile

Look at the left side of the chart. You'll see that front, side, & height measured in meters. If the target is facing you, you'll have to use your best guess based on the width of the target tank.

Cross reference those rows with the tank columns to find the range. It's not 100% accurate, but it's damn close. Be sure to know the difference between binoculars, which I shortened to "Noc". This will allow you to estimate range with the binoculars vs "Gun" sights.

I used this chart just last night on FVP. Although, I almost have it memorized.

An enemy t34 was attacking our tank spawn from distance. My "tankmate" and I were leaving the spawn and had almost made it to the tree line when I heard the whistling of a round near my panther. I turned back to see the smoke plume from a tree line. So, I turned my front glacis toward him, sighted him in the binoculars. He was facing me and filled about 1/3 of the 5 mil spar. I dialed in about 1600m on the gun sight and bounced a round into him. He then backed up, turned to avoid some trees, and exposed his side, I dialed up the gun sight to about 1700m and put a round right into the chassis. 1 smoking t34.  All this happened in less than a minute. In tanks, I find it's usually who puts the first round on target whens.

I bought TC when it was first released, but didn't play it until recently. IMO, it's as much fun as flying. I wished I had played it sooner. So, much fun!  :)
