Interface Using Controller (Hotas)

Recommended Posts

Posted

Type of improvement:  Interface

Explanation of proposals: It would be great if we could map menu interface controls to the Hotas. For example: Using the hat switch to select menu options, the trigger to select, and button 2 to escape.

Benefits: In VR, it is necessary to release the controls, lean forward, and find the mouse in order to navigate menus. Even for those out of VR, we often have cockpit set-ups that put us back from our computers (it breaks immersion a bit to have a mouse and keyboard in your P-51). This would allow more ease of use for navigating menus and get us quickly to what we love to do: fly!

It would be nice if someone at 1CC acknowledged this post. Is it even worth it to give suggestions?

I know in TARGET and Joy2key, you can put mouse clicks on your Hotas buttons/switches. But you would have to have the up/down/left/right cursor functions mapped to so you can navigate the menus. You could always get a trackball mouse and attach it to the left side of your Throttle, there are wireless ones too, and it will always be there by your throttle away from the desk. You can see if your Slew TDC can on your throttle can function as an in game mouse, and use the lock button for a left click. You never mentioned what kind of HOTAS you were using either.  But you can always use Voice Attack and not worry about touching anything.

The Devs tend to not acknowledge any posts. First of all, they've got better things to do than write replies to every single suggestion. Furthermore, history has shown that many times when they did "acknowledge" a post, it came back to haunt them. People tend to see it as some kind of promise that it'll be done, and then they go ask about the status in every single dev blog, and get angry at them when it turns out it wasn't a promise after all. Better to not spend any time and not give any false hopes.

I'm sure they read the suggestions forum every once in a while. However, a suggestion must be *really* popular to have even the slightest chance of it being implemented. The Devs have a busy schedule, where there is simply no room for any suggestions except the very most popular ones.

Seeing the so-far mediocre response to this suggestion, I wouldn't get your hopes up about it ever being implemented. Although I do see the merit of your suggestion (I also play Elite Dangerous, which has a really good GUI control with a HOTAS setup), this is low on my wishlist. Grabbing your mouse is only a minor nuisance, and it doesn't really get in the way of flying since you barely have any menus then (the map being the only exception). On the other hand, implementing it is less trivial than it might appear (the main menu should be doable, but how to control some of the more complex menus like starting a Career?), and might cost a lot of time that the Devs simply don't have.
