What hardware for Throttle, RPM, Mix and Radiators do you use?

Recommended Posts

Just curious, because im thinking about the best setup for Sturmovik.

Im steering with a Warthog Stick on a Virpil WarBRD Base.

I use the Warthog Throttle only for Throttle.

I steer the Mix, RPM, Radiators via Keyboard currently, because i am too lazy to connect my Saitek Throttle or Honeycomb Throttle each time...

How do you handle it?

I do not search for recommendation for hardware, im just curious, how you do practically.

Same here

No, I have 2 quadrants for engine management, one for throttle, rpm and mixture, the other for rads, boost, supercharger etc

There are 3 switches beneth the throttels so you have options to open or close 3 radiator types, depends on your mapping.
Nearly all my radiators are mapped to these switches / keys, makes it more easier for me than to use the keyboard

I hope you don't mind me posting a rather basic  complicated looking piccie of my button/lever control setup....I use a Saitek X52, Saitek pedals and three Saitek quadrants.

The two Saitek quadrants highlighted on the left outlined in yellow are for engine management. The red one highlighted in the middle is a Saitek quadrant I use for gear, flaps, dive brakes and weapon management.

Wow, thanks. I need to check that.

I could use the Honeycomb as a replacement for 2 Logitech Throttle Quadrants maybe ?

I am generating ideas!

I'm thinking of getting a throttle too, but many of them look so plasticky.  Visually they have a sort of Fisher-Price toy like appearance.  How do they feel in the hand and to operate?

I've been using the full CH setup, Fighterstick, Pro Trottle, and, Throttle Quadrant for almost 20 years now.  They work for me.

Using the second X56 now. Yes I know, it is garbage. But at least it is cheap... Or is it? ? The perfect setup doesn't exist for me. On the 56 throttle I can use two axis thingies for prop rpm and mixture with my left thumb perfectly though. And the mode switch means you can use the switches and buttons for at least three different commands. That I find very handy.?

I use VKB Gunfighter Mk III with Ultimate Grip and Virpil CM3 Throttle.

Love them both. Thinking about adding one of VIrpil's Control Panels just not sure I would make good use of it yet.

Ch Throttle Quad, bought one used and been working for me for 10 years. The pots are a little sketchy you have to add some filtering in to them but other than that work great. 6 levers and some buttons too.

Im using this universal combo. Its handy for milsims and civsims alike. Plenty of knobs and sliders and not too complicated to use with a headset either.

Throttle, rpm, inlet/outlet rads and mix on Warthog throttle, water/oil rads on Warthog stick thumb hat switch. I've been thinking about buying a throttle quadrant but it's not really mandatory, everything is ok currently and it would be one more device to attach every time. I have my stick, throttle and pedals mounted on a wheel stand pro which is really handy but there is no room for quadrant.

Out of curiosity, what is this Hornet control panel -like device?

I have been also thinking about getting a throttle quadrant, but not sure about Saitek/Logitech quality and duration.

Currently am also considering VKB NXT modules for it, but have not made up my mind yet.

It is the Winwing Hornet Startup-panel.  Intended for the DCS Hornet in the first place. I find it very handy for all of my modules/sims.

VKB gladiator NXT with a mouse and a keyboard.

This is still almost 1 for 1 my setup these days.

I use CH products for radiators ( water-oil) shutters, prop and mixture.

( The other switches for things like bombs config, gunsight, etc.

Saitek throttle quadrant at main engine control.

A homebuilt inverted lunchbox, with a bodnar board inside.

(It works!)

That, right there, is kick ass.

My lack of electronics knowledge (electricity is magic as far as I'm concerned) is keeping me from doing something similar.

I've got a Virpil CM3 that I use as my primary throttle (RPM, Throttle, Cowl/Water radiator). Oil radiator is controlled by my TWCS, and mixture is a single gear-falcon lever on a button box.

I use Joystick Gremlin to map these all to virtual axes, which are bound in game. Turning the mode selector changes the Joystick Gremlin mode, which lets me reconfigure these dynamically. So for example, when flying Bf 110s, I just switch to mode 4 and the twin throttles on the CM3 become Throttle 1 and 2, respectively.

Look at the recently released VKB GNX modules THQ that you can combine as needed, customize knobs.

Each THQ module has 3 axis and 8 buttons, prices start from $ 70 (in USA) per module, plus 15 for USB HID controller.

See then in this picture, are two at left side of joystick.

When I was still simming regulary,I used this unit custom made by Spitsim controls. I only added the handles and wired up the electronics. It`s still connected in my cockpit, waiting for me to jump back into action again, once in a while.

Levers waste space. Linear pots for  for DCS Mossie throttles. Two turn side wheel for throttle in single engine aircraft.

Hi, Yesterday I ordered a Logitech Throttle Quadrant (55€). Do you believe that it is a good choice? I currently have a complete CH set (stick, throttle and pedals) and my idea is to continue using my CH throttle and use the 3 new axis for propeller/rpm, mixture and turbo. The 3 switches below for the three type of radiators.

It is a good choice. Of course, for much more money you can get more quality. After some time lever potentiomemeters will start to send bad readings, and your right side (hud) will be spammed with small changes in readings. Then you need to clean potentiometers somehow, but it will happened again. If you do not use hud (pro gamer ? , not me) then no problems.

ps; do not forget that you have 3 more hidden buttons when lever is in minus position.

OK thanks, I didn't know anything about those 3 more buttons. Maybe I can configure them for cut-off or something like that. In my country it is impossible to find a CH Throttle Quadrant (3x cost) and Honeycomb it is too large to fit my desktop table.

I'm getting rid of my pair of Logitech quadrants, going to switch to the new VKB GNX devices instead. The Logitech devices are too noisy for my liking, plus I can free up a USB port in the process.

How did you program Honeycomb for IL2?  I just got it and would love to have the gear toggle work propperly.  Thanks

Just got myself the gnx+thq (three axes + 8 buttons), and I am having trouble mapping everything, I go by trial and error really…

if anybody has some advice I would highly welcome it as well, as I don’t have hands directly on throttle whole time.

Do you know whether the FW 190 style Throttle module is already available?

I don't see it on their website.
