Farewell Oculus it was a great ride

The new company as it will be known now is Meta. And they are dropping the Oculus brand.

It will be Meta Quest. Facebook will fall under the Meta Umbrella. Meta Facebook, Meta Quest, Meta Horizon, etc.

 

They are going mainly for the social stuff and based on the presentation today it is going to be quite interesting in a few years time to see how folks get together, collaborate together and even game together. Some very cool stuff shown in that regard.

 Rather than staring down at the phone one will be in the Virtual World doing things together. Some high ambitions there. And especially focused on continued development on the AR glasses.

 

There was talk of a new upcoming device named Cambria I believe but not real clear yet on all the details. Supposed higher spec device to test things out before filtering down to the Quest line. And there was mention of possibly offering a Quest version sans the Facebook requirement.

I also watch yesterday that long sales pitch presentation, I believe the new name Meta came from all the Metaamphetamines they took to oversell what they do. (or supossed to do)

 

Honestly, If I want to play table tennis  I will play real table tennis, If one day decide I want to practice fencing I would play real fencing where the swords touch each other, and If I want to meet with my friends we meet in a real bar and take some real beers, and If I want to pilot a WWII wardbird in a war scenario I just need a good VR headset and IL-2. 

 

Everythingelse I am not interested. Virtual beers or Virtual tapas would take several centuries to arrive... ? 

 

In one way I was fustrated to see how the best PC-VR company (Oculus) ended in all this social stuff to grab data and sell it.

 

In the other hand, I was happy to see that they didn´t progress too much in the hardware side, so probably will never need to go to their hardware to play IL-2 VR.  ?

That is true but they deserve some credit - there are a lot of flight simmers now that got into VR via the inexpensive Quest 2 , which is good for VR integration overall. I see many across the various flight sim forums and more getting into it every day.

Quest is not for me or you - but it still is doing good things for the industry.
