Thanks, so seems to be it was to direct fighters to where the enemies were, but unless in contact with radar control giving you vectors (since they knew your position) it would not work to return to your base on your own.

Am I missing something?

From what I understand, it could be used to give you a general vector back to base.

That's right. You needed ground-based direction-finding assistance to locate your plane and pass instructions to you.
