slikslik Posted October 27, 2021 Posted October 27, 2021 I have the option to enable "Variable Rate Super Sample" in the Nvidia VR settings. I can select Off, Adaptive or Always On. I have the Pimax 8ks and Pitool etc installed, so my question is, what does this setting do? Will it have an impact on Pitool or Steam settings? Do I even need it? Also, the VR pre rendered frame setting. Is there a recommended setting for IL 2? All info is much appreciated..take care...Eddie.

Variable Rate Supersampling (VRSS) is a new technique to improve image quality in VR games. It uses NVIDIA Variable Rate Shading (VRS), a key feature in NVIDIA’s Turing architecture, to dynamically apply up to 8x supersampling to the center of the VR headset display, where the eye is generally focused. It intelligently applies supersampling only when GPU headroom is available in order to maintain the VR headset’s fixed FPS and ensure a smooth VR experience. Not sure if it actually works in IL-2. My system (RTX 3090) says no and I havent messed with it, but here is a thread on it that says it does: If you havent used the Modified OpenVR DLL with AMD FidelityFX SuperResolution Upscaler, then I would suggest using that instead. Works great and gives a healthy performance boost. Forumthread here: As far as pre-rendered frame settings there is no recommended IL-2 settings as it is up to your specific system and your exeperience, Try the different settings and select the one that you feel gives you the best experience. slikslik Posted October 27, 2021 Author Posted October 27, 2021 Thanks Slo Mo. When you say you're not sure if it works in IL 2, does that mean you have tried it with the setting on off? Is this a better way to super sample? Will it work with the Pitool and Steam VR settings? I have googled this question, about the Nvidia VR settings, and some of the videos I saw had the VR Super Sample option greyed out. Not available on some cards? I have a 3090. It would be nice if I knew what the hell to do with it.lol. I guess I'll try setting it to "always on", and see what happens. The only VR game I play is IL 2. I hope I don't screw something up. Thanks again buddy...take care...Eddie.

With that said, I would suggest skipping VRSS and go for the AMD FidelityFX SuperResolution Upscaler. That I have used extensively and it works great. Doing just about the same stuff as far as I understand, but using only software so it works in a lot of games, is open source and not locked to Nvidia cards. Cheers
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted October 28, 2021 Posted October 28, 2021 (edited) The thread is from beginning of January 2020, so two years old. It does not work and will not work, as Jason said in the thread. He's right in that Nvidia dropped this without warning, right when IL-2 Devs were switching to DS. FS+VRSD would have resulted in a much better solution, but as he said they didn't have the manpower to switch forth and back right away. There's a project plan to keep and important steps towards monetising they got to keep aiming at frequently. Btw : The Pimax solution was a hardcoded one with incredibly strong borders, somewhat buggy shaders, large pixelation, hence unusable basically. And not vrss, as there was no upscaling at all in the Pimax solution. So no. You can log: October 2021 ; it does not work. AMD's fidelity FX can be injected. It works much much better than the Pimax BS, but upscales the entire picture without several stages - so it is very limited in what it can do and also always affects the center of vision as well. It's a bad makeshift solution compared to VRSS(2) and does not match VRSS even remotely. There were threads on that, and there was a description in the thread I had built as well. I'll dig it out and rebuild it after the Vive Pro 2 has been fixed. Edited October 28, 2021 by SCG_Fenris_Wolf
slikslik Posted October 28, 2021 Author Posted October 28, 2021 I agree. It doesn't show IL 2 in the list that allow me to enable VRSS. I'm wondering why that option is not greyed out. I googled several questions on video regarding how VRSS works for other simmers with 3000 series cards, and when they showed all their Nvidia panel settings etc.,every one of them had the VRSS option unavailable. Greyed out. Why isn't mine? I'm on driver version 471.96. At any rate, my Pmax is running great with Pitool 101.271 and Steam VR settings. so I guess it's no big deal. It was more of a curiosity really. Things like that drive me nuts. I really do appreciate the info etc. that I recieve from the members of this forum. If anyone has ANY questions regarding VR and Flight sims, this is the place to come. Thanks again all...take care...Eddie.
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted October 28, 2021 Posted October 28, 2021 You can put pre-rendered frames to 3 or even 4 in the control panel, depending on how fast your refresh rate runs (I don't know which Pimax you have. The faster the higher you can set these. With 90Hz you should keep a max of 2-3 pre-rendered frames, on 120Hz you can go 3-4).
slikslik Posted October 29, 2021 Author Posted October 29, 2021 I have the 8kx and Pitool version 101.271. I have a 3090, but I didn't install the new Pitool and firmware. I like the way everything runs with older versions, so no need for me to do anything other than tweaking Nvidia etc. settings. Right now, I have prerendered frames set to 3. Seems to be OK. Thanks SCG..appreciate your input. take care...Eddie.
