The headset is not released yet, they are still 3-4 months out.

Probably then would be better time to compare to those that are already out there.

IMHO the better comparison would be it to Reverb G2 and Vive Pro 2. For this kind of money the image quality of the Aero should be considerably better than those two headsets. But I would not compare the Aero in it's current state, as it is not fully baked yet I don't think.

The reason why the Varjo is so expensive or why to get it for this high price is surely not the resolution, but the foveated rendering with eye tracking. So for me it is absolutely crucial if this works with simulations out of the box or not.

If it works, it would be worth the money for me, because it would open up simulations that I can't run (at 90 fps, lower is a no-go for me) like IL2, Assetto Corsa Competizione, MFS and possibly even DCS if I get a new processor. With my "brain computation" - not being able to enjoy sims sub 90 fps -  I am quite limited in regards of simulations right now and opening that up would be great.

I don't care a dime about the resolution as long as it is around the Reverb mark, because for now that is really enough to enjoy any title.

They also claim those lenses are significantly more expensive.

I am sure their "baked in" dynamic resolution I referenced earlier showing PPD for each band will work with our titles.

Eye tracking and adjusting the rendering based on where the eyes are looking - not sure that would ever work with our titles.

But at least it is a step in the right direction, and likely the device can be updated via software/firmware over time. Not sure how much the game developers would have to do to accommodate this.

Anyway going to be interesting and I am anxious to try it out. I know one thing as long as I am happy going to be the last headset I purchase for quite a while. Will have to start saving for a 40xx GPU lol.

Try Automobilsta 2. Great graphics and not to much strain on lower GPU's. The Madness engine works great in VR. Wish IL2 used it.

That is the only reason that would make me buy another headset then my current G2. The resolution is still 2 graphics card generations away to be able to be maxed out and I also don't want to compromise clarity for a bigger FoV. So eye tracking based rendering is the only real leap forward that makes sense in my opinion. Not at all a fan of fixed foveated rendering, this effect is already the case with the G2 anyway (due to the lenses) and I don't like that at all. Edge-to-edge clarity is important in my opinion.

This is my go-to sim/VR game currently, next to AC and Raceroom ?

Here are review of RoadtoVR:

I would not mind to pay that for a perfect VR headset, but that FOV will kill me.

That is incredibly troubling :o:

As far as I know this is only possible with an engine that is constituted with forward shade rendering. So not with IL-2.

So the Varjo Aero is basically +200 pixels in vertical and horizontal, a much smaller FOV, but aspheric lenses (no godrays but slight pupil swim), and automatic IPD adjustment --- compared to the Vive Pro 2.

P.S. I'll still check it out anyway. But with it being one of the lowest on the FOV scale, Eye-Tracking/Dynamic foveated rendering not working in IL-2, and me being easily annoyed by geometric instability, I have my doubts. For a €2350 device ($2600), this is quite a lot of red flags to consider. The lens design is intriguing.

Q & A Session with MRTV on Aero:

This kind of one step forward, two steps back evolution is unfortunate. Hopefully Valve will upgrade Index resolution. I can wear glasses with the Index so even the available custom aftermarket prescription inserts would be a more a luxury than a necessity.

From his written review at https://mrtv.co/2021/10/varjo-aero-review-the-new-king-of-high-end-vr/ and the startlingly high cost of the Aero, below are the paragraphs that are currently keeping my wallet closed until someone I trust in this forum, such as everyone who has posted to this thread, has their own IL-2 review:

G2 –> Aero: Now with the Reverb G2, you are already used to incredibly crisp visuals in VR and the jump to the Aero won’t be as dramatic as for owners of the aforementioned headsets. But indeed you will also get better visuals with the Aero, simply thanks to the higher resolution and the aspheric lenses. Despite the misinformation on Reddit, the Reverb G2 lenses actually are really good, especially when compared to the Pro 2 ones. Still, the aspheric lenses of the Aero offer the clarity that you love with the G2 but over a bigger area and that might be worth it for you. Also, the horizontal FOV is slightly wider, but not if you had already modded the G2. Overall, you do get better visuals and that might be worth it for you, especially if edge-to-edge clarity had been a problem for you with the G2. Moreover, you would be upgrading to Lighthouse tracking, which will offer much better controller tracking as compared to the one you are using right now.

On the other hand, if you are happy with your G2, especially as far as the edge-to-edge clarity is concerned, I do not think it is worth it to spend nearly 3000€ on the upgrade, especially since the G2 even has a better audio solution than the Aero, is a very comfortable headset and works for users of all kind of different head sizes.”

I also never use my G2’s controllers since I currently only flight sim.

But if others here who also have a Reverb G2 are blown away by the Aero in IL-2, and prescription lens adapters (such as those from widmoVR) become available for the Aero, and no other headset maker brings to market something comparable in the next 3-4 months we have to wait before any of you get an Aero in your hands - then I’ll probably get an Aero

Thanks for answering that. Then I guess this headset is definitely a pass for me, especially given the price. I am very happy with my Reverb in terms of visuals

Going to pass this one (happy with G2 for now), maybe if it's price is ~600€.

I think in gaming we don't need human eye resolution due to game graphics aren't on that level and with higher resolution everything still looks plastic.

So it's a waste of hardware requirements to run it.

Perfect VR headset IMO would be Reverb G2 with it's display resolution and ppi at sweet spot but with edge to edge clarity and higher FoV.

Maybe new curved display technology and lenses can achieve that in future while keeping hardware requirements to run it low.

Right now running crazy 8k or 12k VR displays with cpu/gpu available is not so good.

£600 vs £2000, just no. There's not remotely enough increased spec to warrant the extra £1400 imo.

Placed an order. Such a letter has arrived.

"We’ve received your order, and it’s now being processed.

Please note that the estimated delivery time is 3-4 months from the time of purchase. You will receive an email with a tracking code when your purchase is ready for shipping.

Here’s a summary of your order:"

Is that all, or should there be another confirmation email? Who ordered, how was it with you?

Exact same email I got when I ordered the day of the announcement. That is the only email I have received.

My CC charge showed in pending for about 4 days, then dropped off so apparently they will not run it through until ready to ship.
