I mean, they're just .50 cal.  It matters more what you hit when you're talking about machine guns.  I've seen plenty of people pepper the hell out of bombers and other planes with little to show for it while another pilot in the same plane could put an enemy aircraft down very quickly by hitting vital components.  Far from indestructible, it seems you opponent was pretty lucky to get that plane home.
