Summer kept me busy with all kinds of stuff, so I've not been flying for 5 months. Though I've been keeping track of the updates. I got a new joystick to break in, and did some practice flights. The started a new career with the Battle of BP to check out some of the changes. I figured that P-38's would be a good way to shake of some rust and get used to the new hardware.

 

We took off with a pair of 500lbs to attack an armored column. The escort (yay!!) was already airborne for us at waypoint #2. We did a 360 so they could get climb above us. On our way into the target, there was a bee's nest going on well off to our north. Far enough away for our escort to not peel off. Got to target. Lined up and dropped bombs. We blew up some stuff on the first pass. I remember in the past that it took *forever* over a target for the "Mission Completed" to pop up, however as I lined up for a second pass, I got the "RTB". Wow. Was this a change?

 

Regardless, I recalled my guys, and we made a B-line for home. I noticed a lone 109G-6 low and heading south at 2 o'clock. I gave the "cover me" command, and as the 109 passed under my nose, I rolled over, got behind him. I hadn't shot at a plane in 5 months and was flying with new hardware, so I'm not expecting this to be a great pass and kept my thumb off the cannon button so as not to waste the "good stuff". I guesstimate where 50's should go as the bandit broke, I put the nose there, and pulled the trigger. The 50's hit home. Something in the 109 broke because he snapped out of control and spun in. I pulled up, and a whole gaggle of 109's were coming in. There were P-38's and 109's everywhere. I was using the 50's mostly, and then using the cannon when I felt like it was a sure thing. It was a lot of fun to be flying again. I had the difficulty only on "moderate", but I landed (very clumsily!) with 5 kills.

 

It was just a ton of fun. The updates really changed the BoBP for me. It's like a whole new game!

Yes, it's a recent change to make fighter-bomber missions not drag on so long now.

Thanks for that answer! That'll literally be a game changer for the early war campaigns when you're left with skinny bullets after you drop bombs.

Agreed. I'm enjoying IL2 BP so much more with the recent changes.   Flying an RAF career at present in a Spitfire.  Last mission I was almost disappointed by how quickly the ground strike force departed after the initial attack!  LOL.  They dropped bombs and exfilled while I was lining up a strafing run on AA!  "Hey, wait for me!"
