Gladiator Start-Up?

I'm having problems getting the Gladiator engine to start in CLOD/Tobruk. I've followed the pdf card in the game folder, looked online for what I might be missing, played around with controls and clickables, but nothing seems to allow the engine to start. The started will turn and turn, but then it won't catch and start. Is there something that's missing from the start up card or something glitched with the start up?

I just tried and had the same trouble as you.

I was able to get the engine to start by turning the fuel cock so that 'main tank' was at the 12 o'clock position.

Hope this helps.

I noticed there is a secondary fuel cock on the right side of the dashboard that seems to only be controllable by the AI Autopilot. I set mine to main tank, and nothing. But I noticed when the computer AI autopilot starts the engine, it sets to "main tank" but there is also a small red handle on the right side of the dashboard that turns to a different position and that allows the engine to start. The problem occurs that when you start cold - the plane has never been running, then that secondary red fuel cock seems to be unusable and the plane won't start. If you go to start a plane that was running, that secondary control is already set up for you.

Has anyone else had this problem?

How much throttle are you adding?

Only 10-12% is required.

And you need to wait till the engine warms up before applying full throttle.... leave it at 10-12% (maybe slight increases as heats up) until 27 degrees.

Startup List:

Start-Up, Taxi and Take-Off Procedures
1. Apply chocks
2. Set magnetos 1&2 to ‘On’ (1)
3. Set fuel cock 1 to auxiliary (‘Gravity’) (2)
4. Set mixture to 100% (3)
5. Pull air intake shutter (carburettor heat 1) to ‘Open’
(100%) (4)
6. Set oil radiator dial to ‘Cooler on’ (5)
7. Apply 10-12% throttle (6)
8. Start engine (default key is ‘i’)
9. Wait until engine temperature reaches 26-27°C (7) then
push throttle forward to 100%
10. After some coughing, engine should catch and start to
run smoothly
11. Throttle back to idle
12. Set fuel cock 1 to ‘Main’ (2)
13. Push air intake shutter (carburettor heat 1) to ‘Close’
(0%) (4)
14. Remove chocks and release breaks
15. Slowly increase throttle until the aircraft starts to move
16. Steer by using rudder and brakes
17. On runway accelerate to approx. 70-80 mph (8) then pull
stick smoothly to take off

Can't wait for the VR version of that game, The Gladiator was my favorite plane in the original IL-2, now with that check list and start-up procedure I WILL BE IN HEAVEN ?

Thanks. I got it working after about 10 tries. For whatever reason that secondary fuel cock only turns sometimes when trying to start. Other times it makes a "snap" sound and the engine doesn't start. Weird... But this is progress at least.

I had the same problem. I found there are three things to watch during the start up. First, as others have noted, the fuel cock should be set to "main", not "gravity". I think this is a misprint in the flashcard. Second, the mixture lever is not always set correctly by default. It seems that the lever works in the opposite direction to most aircraft in that it's pulled aft to "normal" position, and forward for "weak" (which I assume is the equivalent of lean). However, I've found that sometimes the lever will be set aft but the mixture is actually in shutoff, which you can see if you have visual aids turned on. Moving the mixture lever forward and back seems to reset it correctly. The third thing I noticed which tripped me up initially is that sometimes it takes a few attempts to get the engine started (just like in real life), but on each failed attempt the throttle is automatically moved back to 0% even though your physical joystick throttle is still set to 10%. You might need to move your joystick throttle back and forward again to reset the throttle correctly in the game. Hope this helps.

Thanks, yes after messing around some with the controls as outlined, I got it working.

At last I've found a source of information about the dear old Gladiator. It seems to be the forgotten offspring of COD, Blitz, and Tobruk. I don't have trouble starting the Gladiator, but after that, the throttle seems to be the only control that works. Looking at your start-up list above, I can't get any of the following to work:fuel cock,  air intake shutter, oil cooler, mixture, engine temperature starts at 198 f and never cools down. After I fly for about 10 minutes the engine blows up. Any help, or ideas, would be appreciated.

She's an air-cooled radial - no cowl flaps or radiator.

Fuel system has one quirk, pls see here

Mixture control lever is dependent on / hard-linked to throttle lever, but note the markings re Weak/Normal :

Oil cooler seems to work fine on my key mapping, you can also click/drag the rotating white dial (bottom-right on the panel).

I'm not sure it's fair to say she's been forgotten; pls see here for my reasons.

emmett_grogan,

Thank you for your very prompt and helpful reply. I'm beginning to understand the Gladiator a little better. I misread the coolant temp. It was Centigrade not Fahrenheit. However,  I can't see that mouse or key controls will move the oil cooler. I'll try another long flight to see if the oil heats up. In the past it seems to have made the engine blow. I'll let you know if I have more problems. Thanks again for your response.

I have 'Open Oil Radiator' mapped to "O" key, 'Close Oil Radiator' = "Alt-O"

On spawn-in, press and hold (or mash away - I count 20 key-presses) until indicator arrow points to "Cooler On".

The click-drag option is up/down, not side-to-side.

Good luck 8~)

emmet_grogan,

My thanks, again, for all your help. I've managed to control the oil and coolant controls via key controls. The gas handle rotates visually, but the oil handle does not, though I have control. I can no longer control any command via the mouse Could I have added some incorrect key control? Also, though I have deleted all pan and view controls, they still operating and interfering with new commands. I hope you're able to point me in the right directions. I was away from Blitz/Tobruk for awhile. Before I left, I had no problems. Somewhere I seem to fallen behind the envelope.

Agai, my thanks,

Just to add, I've tried the "MouseLeft=MouseControl" with no success. A left click on the MouseControl line is blank and "Delete","Add," and "New" pressing the left click on the mouse adds nothing. It remains blank.

Getting to the point of pure guesswork on my part, now, but..

Kinda sounds like the 'toggle independent' camera mode got wiped. Mine's set to F10 (think that's the default); try from page 25 (-ish?) in the original CoD manual :

CoD Pilot's Notes

Just to be clear - while I bought CoD when it was released, I've been flying it for a grand total of mebbe six weeks. No wealth of hard-earned experience here, pls don't expect too much.. 8~)

AT LAST!

I finally solved the problem. I was unable to assign the mouse "left click" to the mouse. I looked all over, nothing worked. Finally, after many, many attempts, I left the left click button down for a few moments and it assigned itself. Now it works.

Thanks for sticking with me. I have appreciated all your help!
