Unlocking aircraft

Another noob question sorry but I'm playing career mode in IL2 BOS and there are aircraft with a padlock. How do I unlock them? Do I need to complete a career?

Those are either collector airplanes, or airplanes belonging to a module you haven't bought yet. You can find the full list of collector planes here: https://il2sturmovik.com/store/collector-planes/

There are no "unlocks" in this sim.

Keep in mind that in career mode not all planes are available due to the timeframe of the combat theater particular to that career and squadron. If you're flying a Battle of Stalingrad career for instance the Yak 9/9T generally won't be available due to the fact that it was not historically available during that battle, thus it will be greyed out and you can't check it for use. The same goes for your selection of squadron to fly the career in - if that squadron only flew Yak 1s than other planes like the LA-5 or P-39 won't be available for you to fly. And like mentioned above some aircraft are premium planes and you need to buy them to use them in game. I hope this helps a little.

Which aircraft and which Great Battles titles do you own? It's possible that you don't own the title with that aircraft in it or one of the individual Collector Planes that are sold separately.

If you want to fly a specific plane, an easy way to tell if you own it is to try to fly it in a quick mission

The other interpretation of the question - hit F1 - that will end the padlock view.

I actually have some screenshots from back then. Back then you also had the super cheap RU version of the game where you started off with the LaGG-3 and Bf-109 F-4 and had to grind to unlock the other planes. I think I spent around 150 hours going through unlocking everything for the BoS aircraft. I think you'd get around 100-150xp per mission, and that's assuming you successfully completed it. die/get shot down? Doesn't matter if you're only 1km from the checkpoint, you get nothing.

I think the best decision was to get rid of them. nothing like a slap in the face of having to grind unlocks in a game you just paid $60+ for.
