Have_Gun_Will_Travel Posted September 25, 2021 Posted September 25, 2021 I was reading Aircraft Aces 39 SPAD VII Aces of World War 1. Page 65 mentioned a Belgian Ace (Edmond Thierffry) who's SPAD caught fire. He 'escaped death' by a unusual feature incorporated in all the SPAD's - the ability to jettison the fuel tank. I would like to put forwards to the developers to incorporate this feature. The article mentions all SPAD's. I understand more investigation is required but hopefully this is added to one the up coming updates. 2
Chief_Mouser Posted September 25, 2021 Posted September 25, 2021 How on earth did that work? The lower tank beneath the cockpit floor? Can't see it coming into in the sim but I'd like to know the details. ?
Tycoon Posted September 26, 2021 Posted September 26, 2021 (edited) What I'm wondering is how did it help, I mean if the airplanes on fire already? Not like getting rid of the fuel will help if it's already burning without it? Edited September 26, 2021 by Tycoon
US103_Baer Posted September 26, 2021 Posted September 26, 2021 Yeah, believe the tanks could be jettisoned. Would be nice, but currently fires are easily extinguishable in game so no real need. Without making this an fm/dm whining thread, I'd just say that there are a few more higher priority fixes.
=IRFC=Gascan Posted September 26, 2021 Posted September 26, 2021 Yep, use the rudder to sideslip and dive hard before the fire grows too much and its not too hard to put out a fire. If the pilot is wounded, you may not be able to sideslip enough to put it out: diving alone isn't enough. And yeah, probably not the most important thing on their mind right now. Although, they are working on jettisoning external fuel tanks, so, you know, maybe, just because.... 1
J2_Trupobaw Posted September 26, 2021 Posted September 26, 2021 http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/showthread.php?t=59100 Apparently it was not fuale tank being jettisoned, but fuel itself... 1
1PL-Lucas-1Esk Posted September 26, 2021 Posted September 26, 2021 Perhaps any changes may be considered once we will be able to (finally) switch between the fuel tanks if there were more than one. This, alone, will be a neat feature, because it will allow to the better fuel management. 1
[F.Circus]FrangibleCover Posted September 26, 2021 Posted September 26, 2021 Some aircraft did have jettisonable fuel tanks, mind you, I believe the Voisin series used a pair of underwing tanks that could be dropped away if they caught fire but were not 'drop tanks' in the true sense because they were the innate fuel storage of the aircraft.
Garven Posted September 26, 2021 Posted September 26, 2021 (edited) There was a time I thought the tank was able to be jettisoned too, but it appears there is just a rip panel on the tank for dumping fuel in emergency. http://memorial.flight.free.fr/gallery/spadXIII/res2001/d18.jpg http://memorial.flight.free.fr/gallery/spadXIII/res2001/d20.jpg Edited September 26, 2021 by 94th_Vernon 1 1

US103_Baer Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 (edited) Ah, jettison fuel, not tank. Makes sense. Though if the plane was on fire would you want to create a huge stream of fuel? Edit: just read the link. To avoid explosions in crash landing scenarios. Dump fuel and create large hole in tank to depressurise. Edited September 27, 2021 by US28_Baer

I usually switch off the engine, mixture cut off and dive but it never works. So plenty of sideslip and a strong dive.
