WarSlothdsbeckett Posted September 25, 2021 Posted September 25, 2021 Good morning, The last three times I have attempted to run Great Battles I have received the error in the screenshot attached. The only way I know to get out of it is to open the task manager and end the program. I am currently in South Korea and am using to internet connections but I have been here almost a month with no issues so I don't see how there is a connection. Any advice??? Thanks and have a great day! * Different internet connections
SYN_Mike77 Posted September 25, 2021 Posted September 25, 2021 I got that error message a couple of weeks ago. My squadmates informed me it was something going wrong with the video card and I would either have to reinstall the drivers or perhaps reseat the card. I decided to start easy and reninstalled the NVIDEA drivers. Haven't had a problem since. Your millage may vary.
WarSlothdsbeckett Posted September 25, 2021 Author Posted September 25, 2021 I'll give it a shot! Thank you!

WarSlothdsbeckett Posted October 3, 2021 Author Posted October 3, 2021 No not yet. I reinstalled the drivers but to no avail. I'm using a laptop so reseating the card isn't a thing. I'm gonna check out the link above and go from there. Thanks though. Will post what worked for me once I find what works for me!
WarSlothdsbeckett Posted October 11, 2021 Author Posted October 11, 2021 Guess it's ROF for now. I've changed the registry file which was suggested on a youtube video, tried updating/reinstalling the drivers and even the game itself. The link above showed most users doing the same in the end.
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 (edited) Just received one this morning. First one I believe. Edited November 2, 2021 by VBF-12_Stick-95
MajorMagee Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 Does restarting the graphics driver by pressing Win+Ctrl+Shft+B help?

It did reload but did not solve it. Here is another shot. Even without a crash, I am also getting these artifacts. Currently on nVidia 471.41. I have been getting some odd startups with my computer lately where it goes into BIOS. This morning a received a Overclock message. Could OC be causing the issue?
No_85_Gramps Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 1 hour ago, VBF-12_Stick-95 said: Could OC be causing the issue? Yes, that is possible, I recently had the same issue and came to the conclusion that my GPU OC was a bit much, reduced by 15 mhz and all is fine again. Also, watch the temperature levels for your system.
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 Thanks. I ruled out temps previously. Just took off OC. Still locking up. Going to try to re-install the same driver.
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 Reinstalled driver Did a file analysis of game - reinstlled client Still no
No_85_Gramps Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 What driver version are you using for your GPU? Did the game run OK with an earlier version of the driver?
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 (edited) I was using 471.41 at the time I first experienced it. I re-installed it but but things only got worse. I have since installed 496.49 and still have the problem. To summarize I have: Un-done OC Re-installed nVidia 474.41 Repaired game files Installed nVidia 496.49 IL-2 is totally unplayable at this time. The computer works fine otherwise. OK, here's a kicker, it's also screwed in Skin Viewer. UPDATE: It wasn't SV as much as 496.49 was not compatible with my system. Went back to 471.41 and everything works except IL-2. Next step is to re-seat the card when I get around to it. Edited November 2, 2021 by VBF-12_Stick-95
No_85_Gramps Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 Dang, I can't think of anything else at this point. Are you running IL2 from the launcher, or from the il-2.exe?
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 It seems to be bigger than IL-2 and me for that matter. Deterioration on all screens now.
No_85_Gramps Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 Almost sounds like the GPU is failing. Hope you can get it sorted out.
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted November 3, 2021 Posted November 3, 2021 Opened the box this morning and reset the card. After monitoring with GPU-Z, PerfCap is giving me a power indicator when running IL-2. I have EVGA Precision X1 targeted at 100% with temp at 84 however power doesn't get much above 35% when running IL-2 then I get the error and lockup. It's like the card is being starved. I had a similar problem with Precision X1 where it didn't freeze and give me an error message but instead was extremely sluggish with low frame rates. That was caused by the target being too low. Not sure why with a target at 100% it's holding it back now.
MajorMagee Posted November 4, 2021 Posted November 4, 2021 Years ago I had similar mysterious problems, and it all turned out to be a failing power supply.

VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted November 4, 2021 Posted November 4, 2021 (edited) I have been monitoring the system with GPU-Z and Precision X1 and have also been running UserBenchMark. I found that the power levels shown on Precision X1 are reaching much higher to 90-100% which makes me feel better. UserBenchMark gives a pretty constant high grade including for graphics. I took the screenshot below of GPU-Z when running IL-2 when I could actually get spawned in a plane for a short period before it locked. I found something curious when taking a closer look. On the 4th line up from the bottom, PerfCap Reason you'll see blue and/or green bars. When I hover the mouse over these they give a code of VRel for blue or Pwr for green. VRel indicates Limited by reliability voltage. Pwr indicates Limited by total power limit. As you can see both are present at points during the running of IL-2. What is interesting however is that the blue and green bars align with when the bars for GPU Core Clock (top line) are peaking. Even more interesting are the numbers they represent. For the GPU Core Clock it hit a high of 1875MHz. This is of interest because the graphics card specs says the Core Clock has a base clock of 1350MHz and a boost clock of of only 1545MHz. If the 1875MHz is correct it is trying to be OC'd higher than it is capable of. Fact is I don't want it OC'd at all. The GPU Memory Clock also hit a max during these same times of 1750MHz however this is the graphics card specs. Other things to note during the IL-2 run portion: Temperature did not exceed 55 degrees, Highest Watts was 249 with power consumption at 99%. Also, in between the 2 portions of when the blue/green bars are present there is a lull. At that time the Core Clock came down to it's base of 1350MHz. I am getting artifacts outside of IL-2 but no D3D Errors. They occur on web sites for example. For what it's worth this morning before the testing above I re-opened the box again and re-seated the power cable connections on the card which I should have done yesterday. I think this does come down to a power supply or card issue. Not sure how to determine which is the culprit. Edited November 4, 2021 by VBF-12_Stick-95
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted November 4, 2021 Posted November 4, 2021 New symptoms. The screen goes black then comes back on after a second. Then it went black and stayed black. The screen was still working fine as I can test it separately as a TV but the output from the PC to it wasn't working. All cables have been checked. Did a total restart and it came back up with constant artifacts. I think that the card is shot. I have 82 days left on warranty.
No_85_Gramps Posted November 4, 2021 Posted November 4, 2021 At this point I would think it's the card. About the boost hitting 1875 mhz, that's NVIDIA's driver in action. I have a 3060ti that the boost is 1710, I've seen it reach 1920. Card would run pretty warm so I'm still experimenting with finding a safe OC/voltage level. At present I can get 1860 mhz, with an occasional boost to 1875, at 900 mvolts and keep the temp down. 1
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted November 12, 2021 Posted November 12, 2021 For what it's worth my card has been sent back under RMA. The screen artifacts, flashing, etc. was deteriorating fast. Wait and see at this point. 1
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted November 27, 2021 Posted November 27, 2021 Update: Received a replacement re-certified 2080Ti yesterday from EVGA. Installed it today. Have done some testing, including IL-2, and so far so good. 2
