A question about the game engine

Hello fellow devs and players!

Has there been any idea of implementing a new (or old) engine? CLoD engine seems to be more suitable for this kind of a game (and I have to say that the TF guys did a terrific job).

P.S. the intention of this post is not to provoke anyone, it's just a simple question as in my opinion, CLoD has always had a better atmosphere and more natural look overall.

Thanks!

Game engines are not like car engines, where you can remove a few bolts, lift it out, swap a new one in and then drive away.

Instead, they are more like steam trains. It doesn't make any sense to remove the engine from a steam train and swap it, because there is so much work involved that you may as well build a new steam train with the engine you want from scratch.

Removing the engine from a steam train leaves you with almost nothing left. What is left, is almost certainly not compatible with the new engine that you might want to put on the steam train.

Likewise, removing the game engine from IL2 would leave a handful of assets, most of which would not compatible with other engines. There would be so little left to use, that you may as well start again from scratch.

The devs do continue to upgrade the current engine's features.

Things developers rarely do: rework an extensive long-established and profitable product range to use an entirely different game engine. Generally speaking, new engine = new product.

Things developers never do: rework an extensive long-established and profitable product range to use an older game engine that resulted in a loss for its investors and the abandonment of commercial development.

TF are doing great things with the CloD engine, as a team of part-timers without investors on their backs. Whether the engine is actually 'better' is clearly a matter of opinion though, and as far as the IL-2 GB series is concerned, it is going to be the investor's opinions that matter most. And convincing them that they'd get a better return on investment by reverting to the CloD engine, rather than starting from scratch using more recent technology, or continuing developing the existing IL-2 GB engine further, would seem to me to be a rather difficult task. 'It looks better' is certainly unlikely to convince anyone, given CloD's history.

Many others have done it, successfully I might add.

Slow clap, wow. I'd expect something like that on WoT forums. Edit

7. Comments containing profanity, personal insults, accusations of cheating, excessive rudeness, vulgarity, drug propaganda, political and religious discussion and propaganda, all manifestations of Nazism and racist statements, calls to overthrow governments by force, inciting ethnic hatred, humiliation of persons of a particular gender, sexual orientation or religion are not allowed and will result in a ban.

Keep it clean and as friendly as possible. Future obscenities will get you a ban.

Dude, he's not slandering IL-2 GBs by saying that he prefers CloD over GBs and/or that CloD's game engine is better, he's saying that several elements in the CloD are better, which in no way states that GBs sucks.

Every game has their strengths and weaknesses, the engine for CloD and for GBs also have their weaknesses. For example, tree collisions only affect the player aircraft as TFS has stated that it's too much of a load on players PCs for that to happen, collisions with aircraft, objects, and terrain are more realistic (overall) in GBs, and the Night environment is better in GBs (though that may be fixed when TF releases the Visual Update).

Jason stated in the past that they're probably going to need a new game engine... most likely because the GBs engine is the RoF engine (2009) which has been heavily modified. With COVID going on right now this is probably the least of the devs' concerns.

I don't think they can implement the CloD engine into GBs, nor vice-versa as the 2 engines are completely different, with one having it's roots in IL-2 1946, the other having it's roots in Rise of Flight.

I agree with you on that as Drop Tanks, radios, parachutes, oxygen masks, retractable landing gear, etc., weren't in WW1 and therefore the devs had to implement what they could in the time they had and as a result not everything listed above made was included in BoS.

Yes, the CloD engine would have been the best suited as it's roots are in a WW2 sim, but considering that 1C Maddox spent millions of dollars making the original game and only released a half-baked game and failed at making a sequel before throwing their hands up in the air in frustration, 1C probably had nothing to do with that game engine -- until TF came along -- and continuing support of it would be their absolute last choice.

Anyway, let's hope that CloD and GBs can be very successful sims and give us theaters and aircraft that were never in IL-2 1946/done properly.

I would be genuinely interested in examples that changed engine without a new release.

Precisely zero.

It never ceases to amaze me all the armchair software coders who think that suggestions like this are simple to implement and wouldn't be a major drag on time, money, and resources.

The only way that could be done is to port all the 3d models to CloD compatible files and create new flight models and systems again in CloD. There is no way anyone is going to do that.

And the maps. And the missions. And the mission generator, etc, etc...

Zero compatibility between the two softs as it goes aver airplanes.
could work for static objects with just 2 status: alive or dead, but the 3d format should be adapted anyway.
