opsauras Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 So I recently got myself a joystick and started playing il 2 but I noticed how the mouse is really hard to use if I want to look around. So, I found Trackir but its too expensive as I'm on a super tight budget So I found trackhat And I'm wondering if there's anything besides Trackir that i can use as a tracking camera with the trackhat.
ITAF_Airone1989 Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 PS3 camera, but you have to do some modify.. ask to Google, there should be some tutorial

KevPBur Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 ai track works along with Open Track with any webcam or even your smartphone and requires nothing attached to your head. It works well enough for me so long as the room is sufficiently well lit and could be worth a try if you have any type of camera available 1 1

Yes. I bought this same PS3 eye camera locally and removed the IR filter then inserted a visible light filter (small circle cut from a floppy disc). It works great. I've used everyday since just before the pandemic (~Feb/Mar 2020) with zero issues. Its only a little bit of work and can be hard to find floppy discs these days (for the visible light filter). Looks like Delan has a good price and its already modified at the link you gave. I'd say that's a good deal especially if you're in the UK.

Schwalberich Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 I printed myself an Aruco Marker on a sheet of carton an strapped it to a cap. Together with a PS3-Eye from ebay I get Smooth 6-DOF head tracking without tinkering the camera or playing with IR-Leds. Probably together with IR it's better (did not test it, yet) but it's a cheap way to check what head tracking can offer without heavy investment in TIR. Also this works with any Webcam, but it's way smoother with a PS3-Eye 1
rieper_420 Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 Hello Sir, I would fully agree to Scwalberich's post! Try Opentrack with Aruco ? for 0 cost I was running opentrack together with a printed aruco marker glued on some cardboard and glued to some clothespins to clip to my headphones for several years - worked quite nicely tbh... If you have an old webcam lying around, this is a solution you can try with stuff you have at home already without buying anything. => 0 cost solution! (searching for "opentrack aruco" provided some good tutorial videos.. It's rather easy to set up I think) Cheers Rieper.

If I do the webcam or the ps3 camera which one will work good with war thunder?

I purchased this as my first head tracking set 2 months ago and I'm so glad I made this decision....for beginners it's very affordable and the set up instructions are quite easy. Would buy it again? If I do the webcam or the ps3 camera which one will work good with war thunder? If you’re using open track software It should work with any title. I use it for Il2 great battle, il2 blitz/Tobruk, war thunder (it’s been a long while though), and even msfs2020. Works perfect with all of them. As long as you start open track before launching your game, the game will recognize open track as an input. You don’t need to set up anything in the menus of the game. It just works. You may need a slightly different configuration within open track for each game as they all respond slightly different. But it’s easy to save profiles in open track for each game. I have one that works well for great battles and msfs2020 , but another one for blitz/Tobruk, and another for war thunder for example. I suggest trying the free aruco with open track as others have suggested (I wasn’t aware of this one actually). Then if you want to “upgrade” to IR you can get delan clip (or make your own). You’d still be using the same software too so your already familiar with it.

My educated guess would be, yes. My first Webcam was also a 720p Cam from Logitech. The Opentrack Software calculates your head position with the aruco marker based on the black/white contrast and distortion. So 720p is perfectly fine. What the limiting factor is, is the refresh rate of the camera. So lower Hz would mean that fast head movements would create some hickups. But to get a feeling for head tracking with scenic flights and no fast dogfighting an Olde cam should be fine. I think that's also why a PS3-Eye is recommended for IR and without IR as well, as it has 60 Hz refresh rate. (bought it because I wanted to upgrade head tracking with some Diy IR tracker, but found that the PS3 alone with my Aruco is more than enough for what I need)
rieper_420 Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 Hello Schwalberich! Haha Logitech 720p is exactly the same old webcam I found lying around - it works just fine! What a funny coincidence. Seems like this is really a common webcam.. Cheers Rieper 1
HansBlitz Posted September 21, 2021 Posted September 21, 2021 Before I started using VR, I was using Logitech 720 and open track and that did fine for me.

If on a budget use either Delanclip with PS3 camera or Trackhat with PS3 camera. Both offer wireless and wired complete solutions. Both very sturdy. Very easy to use with opentrack (free software). DELANCLiP Fusion - Complete Kit (Wireless) (delanengineering.com) The TrackHat clip Plus
fergal69 Posted September 22, 2021 Posted September 22, 2021 Have you tried looking at Ali Express for Trackir? I'm very tempted to take a chance.
DD_Perfesser Posted September 22, 2021 Posted September 22, 2021 One advantage of opentrack is that it can be restarted while the game is running. Not so with TrackIR
