Cybermat47 Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Ok, we all have those planes we like to fly in a combat sim, even though we know they suck. For me, it's got to be the Bf-110, especially the C-4s that got mauled in the Battle of Britain. It's just such a beautiful plane that I overlook all it's faults (and become easy pickings for the RAF). I also like the He-111 for similar reasons, even though I know I'm fighter bait in one of those things, especially past 1941.
Finkeren Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 I think it's got to be the Mig-3 for me. It's propably the most beautiful piston engined fighter ever built, but completely failed to live up to expectations. If that's not quite crap enough, I'm gonna say the Curtis-Wright 21 Demon. It's just got that destinct 1930s retro-futuristic dieselpunk look to it.
Feathered_IV Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 The Armstrong Whitworth Whitley is a real favourite of mine. Love that jutting Popeye jaw and crouching, vulture-like aspect to the engines.
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 (edited) Wildcat, not quite crap, but certainly not cutting edge when compared to it's land-based brethren. When flown correctly it could be formidable. So much fun in Il2 Pacific theatre scenarios. Edited July 1, 2014 by A1FltTrn=HerrMurf
Rjel Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 I think it's the Lockheed XF-90. Such a beautiful airplane betrayed by changing mission requirements, weak engines and advancing technology. Still looks very sleek.
MiG21bisFishbedL Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 (edited) Buffalo! Fistbump, my good man. If that's not quite crap enough, I'm gonna say the Curtis-Wright 21 Demon. It's just got that destinct 1930s retro-futuristic dieselpunk look to it. Have you flown that in '46? A friend and I picked them for a laugh, thinking "Awesome, this will suck!" We try to fly mostly obscure aircraft (we dub as pooplanes) so the CW-21b was a perfect fit. However, an hour later, we arrived at the same conclusion: The CW-21b is friggin' incredible. Give it a fly with the .50s. It eats Japanese fighters up in turning fights. It also accelerates to 450 km/h without any effort and in short order. It also possesses insanely tame and cooperative handling characteristics. If you haven't tried it yet, do so. It's awesome. Edited July 2, 2014 by MiG21bisFishbedL

Cybermat47 Posted July 2, 2014 Author Posted July 2, 2014 (edited) Just thought of another one for me: the LaGG-3. It looks nice, but barely stands a chance against a Bf-109. And if it's performance in BoS is anything to go by, it handles like a pig! Edited July 2, 2014 by [AJSA]_Cybermat47

Trust me, I have flown it, but I don't quite consider the performance of that 3rd party model to be accurate.
MiG21bisFishbedL Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Trust me, I have flown it, but I don't quite consider the performance of that 3rd party model to be accurate. I've got my doubts as well. Supposedly it was not the most tame aircraft to land, the antithesis of how it handles in '46. However, the airborne handling seems fairly accurate from the scant reports that do exist. That's the hard thing about an aircraft like the Demon; not much info due to its obscurity.
LLv34_Flanker Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 S! On any server online I try to fly the underdog plane aka bomber or jabo, not the fancy fighters Stuka is my favorite "underdog" even much of it's bad reputation is uncalled for. It was a solid performer in it's task.
II./JG27_Rich Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 (edited) I'll say 110 but I won't say it was a failure because think of how many bombers it shot down in the night over Europe. Edited July 3, 2014 by II./JG27_Rich
kestrel79 Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Mig-3 for Russian planes. Something about how far back that cockpit is with the long nose makes it look badass.
LLv44_Mprhead Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 I guess it's Bf 110. Although for some reason quite a few British designs strike me as endearing, like Vickers Wellesley for example.
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 I'll pick P-51 Mustang. And become Finkeren's best friend in the process
TheBlackPenguin Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 Boulton Paul Defiant, did well if encountering only bombers, not so well around fighters. Hawker Hurricane Mk1 with a turret painted on the back of the fuselage, my dad and grandad knew a Bob pilot who did exactly that and survived the war, unfortunately like so much history any evidence is likely lost. Fairey Battle is another one....
Finkeren Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 (edited) And become Finkeren's best friend in the process LOL! When did I aquire a reputation as an anti-brony? I don't think any of the MLP fans will take Bassly's bait though. Edited July 4, 2014 by Finkeren 1
Bassly Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 I just had to try with the Mustang and see how it goes. I guess this time it was only angry looks and a silent manslaughter. Anyway, instead of Mustang I would pick some of the great inventions like this little fellow here. Sad story is that the money was wasted twice.
Rjel Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 (edited) I never imagined it survived. Hope it might be restored someday. I have got to get to this museum. It's only about three hours from my home. What an amazing batch of test planes. Edited July 4, 2014 by Rjel
AndyJWest Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 One of my favourites from RoF.Not exactly a 'bad plane', just rapidly outdated. Unrivalled forward visibility. Unfortunately, the dastardly Hun insists on sneaking up from behind...
siipperi Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 I'll pick P-51 Mustang. That is actually TF 51 I believe. And if that's the case very good pick
Bassly Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 That is actually TF 51 I believe. And if that's the case very good pick P-51D-20-NA "Jumpin Jacques" it is. http://www.hangar11.co.uk/mustang.html
JG1_Barton Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Il-2 1946? the Fw-190. Only thing it could out turn is a P-47. All it had was a good roll rate and armament. Had to be very careful in that plane. Easy to get yourself up **** creek without a paddle.
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Disagree with you Barton. In '46 it was my plane of choice. A-D: Excellent level speed, great dive and amazing roll rate. Just don't try to out climb or out turn some of the other top fighters unless it was the Dora model which zoom climbed like a rocket ship. Awesome bomber killer and BNZ. Rarely attempted to dogfight in it. Use it to it's strengths and it had lots of positives.
Finkeren Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 109 Only Il-2 had more a/c shot down. The Spartans were slaughtered almost to a man at Thermopylae. Must mean they were very poor warriors... 2
