Meaning of Bars and Stripes on member's profiles?

I have noticed on the various threads of this forum that most people who comment have certain bars with stripes  on the left side of the screen under their name.  For example BOS, BON, BOM, etc.  I assume they represent "Battle of Stalingrad", "Battle of Moscow", etc.  I have yet to find an explanation of these bars, so permit me to place the question here.  What did a person who has such a bar have to do to get the bar associated with their profile?  Is this something awarded by completing certain missions or a campaign?  Where can I look to find out more about the member's bars that they have achieved?

They're just vanity icons. [Meaning if they had anything to do with skill, I would have none.] Depends on what version Premium or Standard you bought and when (think early access).

For me they are like "wound stripes" - ever present reminders of being a rotten sim pilot...

My wife asked me the same question, I told her they were discount coupons to be redeemed against online purchases of ladies footwear. She told me to get some more, who am I to say no?
