splat_cat_au Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 Followed all directions and now I've just completed the "Obtain and Install the DServer" stage. So, I downloaded the file as directed - "IL2_setup_Great_Battles.exe" and I installed it and now its doing an update - upwards of 30Gb worth. My question is this; is there a dedicated server version or do I just need another client install to run in dedicated mode? The reason I ask is because the update says it is updating the client when it should really be saying updating DServer. Now, if there is a stand-alone version of the DServer (limited version of IL-2 Sturmovik that includes the DServer software) I would prefer to use that as it would save time, space, and bandwidth for updates. If it is going to install another client I can save myself some time and bandwidth by using a copy of my previously installed client. Or do they really call their server software a client? Thanks Splat 1

Thanks Splat I assume that the file you refer to in your second paragraph is the one that you obtained using the account you set up in "Create a DServer Account", right? If so, that is the limited version of IL-2 that contains the DServer (yes it is a full-size installation). If you start that version and click Play, you go to the main IL-2 screen, but you cannot fly with that version; you can only run DServer.exe in the bin/game folder. Note that in this post, F/JG300_Gruber wrote that he was able to run IL-2 and the DServer that came with his paid install by using the paid account ID and the free DServer account ID, but I never completed a successful test at the time. You could try it and see (read from Gruber's post to the bottom of the linked thread). Edited September 2, 2021 by JimTM

Yep, its the only file available and obtained using the account I set up in "Create a DServer Account". It is also the same file available to my non-DServer account, same link and filename. So, I am simply installing another copy of the game I already have. So I can simply use the install (steam version) I already have and copy it to the PC that is going to act as the server, saving over 30Gb internet usage, and as I'm not actually playing on that PC there shouldn't be any issues starting DServer. Or have I got it wrong?
JimTM Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 I don't have the Steam version so I can't give you reliable advice for that (the manual was written before Steam became an option). The file that comes with the free account is not a copy of the paid game, since it's not playable.
splat_cat_au Posted September 3, 2021 Author Posted September 3, 2021 Ok, here is what I think I know; The file mentioned in the instructions to "Obtain and Install the DServer" is the install application for the standard client. The limited version of IL-2 Sturmovik that includes the DServer software is not determined by the installed software. Any limitations and/or restrictions are determined by the account used to log in to the application/game. If you simply wish to run DServer on a separate PC then any copy of the client that you already have can be used - copy and paste to 'server' PC. If you wish to "play" on this copy of the client then a valid non-DServer account can be used (if system specs allow). Valid accounts may disallow multiple logins at the same time with a single account. As it was I found all this out after my second download using the instructions, my first was mistakenly placed on to a faulty HDD. So after a total of 64Gb transferred I found out I could've just used the client I've been playing on all this time. All the other instructions need to be followed though to run DServer successfully...I believe. 1
