Johnson_Michael Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 Hello, Unfortunately this is my first post and I am not sure whether to post here or the random crash thread or graphics? Anyhow, please move if needed. Just got the game on a new PC Rig, love it so far when it doesn't crash ?. However, like the title states I am having random crashing of the game. No rhyme or reason, I can be in the menu, loading, or at the tale end or beginning of the mission. I have received the BSOD with the following errors: clock_watchdog_timeout or whea_uncorrectable_error or the screen just goes black and pixelated as of late and I have to hard restart ?. With that said, I have no issues playing other games like Zero Hour on Ultra. So I am assuming its some kind of settings/driver issue and not the game or hardware. I am no PC expert, but do understand enough to be dangerous. Maybe I have something set on the graphics that's tripping everything up? I am up for trying anything - but pretty sure this PC should run this game on Ultra no problem ?♂️ PC Omen 30L Desktop W/ Samsung G9 Odyssey 240HZ OMEN 30L Desktop GT13-1350st CTO NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3070 (8 GB GDDR6 dedicated) WD Black 1 TB PCIe® NVMe™ TLC M.2 SSD 1 TB 7200 rpm SATA HDD Cooler Master 800 W Gold efficiency power supply HyperX® 32 GB DDR4-3200 RGB SDRAM (2 x 16 GB) Windows 10 ADV Intel® Core™ i9-11900K (3.5 GHz up to 5.3 GHz, 16 MB L3 cache, 8 cores) Graphic Settings See attached Fixes/Tests PC Hardware diagnostic that does stress tests on all hardware - No issues Reseated Hardware components GPU, Ram, HDD, etc - No issues/everything still works fine Windows Memory Test - no issues All drivers are up-to-date - no issues Scanned for malware/virus - no issues Ran system file checker NVidia settings - Let the 3D application decide - See attachments Didn't update the BIOS - but its a month old Tried Reinstalling from steam - Did not fix the problem Verified integrity of game files - I seem to have 1 file fail and have to be required every time I run the checker ?♂️ 1
FlyingH Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 Where is your game situated? C/Program files......? If so try to move it to another location anywhere else on your disc(s) and see if it works. (You can copy and paste or cut and paste whithout any fuzz)
jollyjack Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 Steam or non-Steam? Try a fresh install indeed, maybe on another drive even. Maybe a DirectX fault?

I have a D drive which is a SATA HDD, so if moving locations doesn't work Ill try that.
jollyjack Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 (edited) Grrr, Steam, with the game still on sale get some stuff (or all like i did from IL2 direct) ? I started with steam, and i still hate it; could be some steam setting causing that. ----------------------- With my 2080ti Program Settings for IL2 some settings i set specifically ... FXAA ON Image Sharpening :Off Mon Tech G-Sync comp ON VertSync Use the 3d Appl settings Power Management: Adaptive Han's troubleshooting, see near the end where DED Rapidus also talks briefly about DirectX and error reporting.: Edited August 27, 2021 by jollyjack

So, fresh install still caused a crash. First mission I clicked it didn't even finish loading. Moved to my other HD "D" and played for a solid 2 hours, multiple restarts, etc. but it eventually crashed as well. Things to note: I did adjust the graphic settings a little (in game). Not sure if maybe I have set something wrong somewhere isolated that is causing the problem. No longer is it the BSOD, just a black pixelated freeze and the PC restarts. I've noted your settings and the thread. I shall continuing testing and report back. Edited August 27, 2021 by Johnson_Michael
Johnson_Michael Posted August 27, 2021 Author Posted August 27, 2021 Tried playing this morning and already have 3 crashes... set graphics to default and immediately crashed on first mission 5 minutes in. So I am a bit confused on how to create dump crash file. Is that from event viewer? or IL2 itself? Not sure I am going to get anything from IL2 as my PC shuts down/restarts and/or BSOD.
Nocke Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 Just a wild guess from here: I did have crashes at a time from system overheating. This did NOT show up when doing stress tests. I finally figured out it was the graphics card heating the system up too much, because the fan was set too low. Testing Cpu and Gpu separately did not result in overheating, only when they where working hard the same time, and only when the Gpu fan was not at 100%. The gpu itself was at around 75 celsius, which for nvidia seems to be fine, but when getting that hot, it heated up its surrounding. In short: check and log temperatures. I wouldn't think a game problem could restart your PC. 1
Johnson_Michael Posted August 27, 2021 Author Posted August 27, 2021 (edited) Good points. As suggested, see my vitals while letting the game run. Does not seem to be taxing my PC hardware at all. My fans aren't even running full speed and I have it set to performance and turbo. I have let it run for 10 minutes now and its stabile (GPU 113F / CPU 150F). When playing zero hour on ultra everything runs full blast and uses about 90% of my GPU. Keep the ideas and suggestions coming though. Also didn't crash this time when not in full screen or 5120x1440. Could that be factor or my FPS? Edited August 27, 2021 by Johnson_Michael
jollyjack Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 (edited) PS i switched to windows LTSB, now LTSC years ago. This after gettting fed up with all those consumer oriented 'updates' with home and pro. Often causing problems. With NVDIA i sticked with 4.11 for quite a long time, only recently i went for 471. Have you got access to any 'old' graphics card you could try, to see if your 3070 is the cause? Maybe VieuwCrashDumps.cmd from the data folder can give you a clue ... send the results to -DED-rapidus. Edited August 27, 2021 by jollyjack

My only question and forgive me, but if other games work just fine wouldn't it present itself as a problem on other games too? I take it these are the logs? Edited August 27, 2021 by Johnson_Michael
jollyjack Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 (edited) I guess so, but i don't see an IL2 related dump, on my system i had an editor crash a few days a go, name was STEditore.exe.2120.dmp. It was made by this *.cmd tool. GameBar suspicious? I don't know what it is, maybe something to do with steam? some others have it too, steam causing problems ... didable steam Beta? Had some issues with steam back in 2019. Edited August 28, 2021 by jollyjack
Nocke Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 check the motherboard temps, not only gpu and cpu. Thats what killed mine. Gpu and Cpu were o.k. temperwturewise.

Had some issues with steam back in 2019. I'm coming to the conclusion its either steam or its a graphics setting that is not playing nice caused by a driver or something similar. I was able to play 3 times for a few hours each with no issue in 2560x1440. With graphics set to high. I bumped a few up today and boom clock_watchdog_timeout within 10 minutes of a mission. I did manage to capture my temps that I was monitoring. See attached CSV file. Nothing temp wise stands out to me. 23 hours ago, 216th_Nocke said: check the motherboard temps, not only gpu and cpu. jollyjack Posted August 30, 2021 Posted August 30, 2021 Well, i give up, can't think of anything else, but Steam .... sorry, good luck hunting. Or buy IL2 direct like i did after my conflicts with steam back in 2019 ... The summer sale is still on for a day or so ...
