On 22 June 1941, at 0340, Olejnik shot down a Russian I-16 fighter, the first pilot to score a victory over the Eastern front. Robert Olejnik was credited with 42 victories achieved flying 680 missions. He recorded 32 victories scored over the Eastern front. Of his 10 victories recorded over the Western front, three were four-engine bombers. Olejnik died on 29 October 1988 in Munich.

I have often wondered abt that O painted on. Could it be for Oljenik? to mark the aircraft...

In the light of this original photo that I was made aware of, I made some minor changes to reflect the additional info.Namely darker and more numerous spots in the mottle and a darker area behind the cockpit. I also made a couple of other tweaks such as removing the exhaust shield paint (does it have a name?) that I can't see in the photo and a glitch in the alpha. So here is an alternative and updated version. I'm also wondering whether the O is nothing more than a spill or a grainy illusion as it is very diffuse. I deliberately removed the white section on the prop spinner because of the weird effect it gave when spinning. It was impossible to look at.
