Hoss Posted August 19, 2021 Posted August 19, 2021 (edited) For you guys waiting for the restock it starts in 1 hr and 30min. (1800 pst) Not everything is back on the shelf though.... one of these days I may spring for that, if and when the TMWH goes south on me. If you wait you may miss it. cardboard_killer Posted August 20, 2021 Posted August 20, 2021 (edited) I've been debating this. I keep going between the winwing at $299 or the VKB space combat edition for $339. I like my VKB gladiator, so I lean toward VKB, but I'm cheap, so I lean toward winwing. Vapor lock! EDIT: anyone know how much winwing charges for shipping? Edited August 20, 2021 by cardboard_killer
Hoss Posted August 20, 2021 Author Posted August 20, 2021 CK, the struggle is real brother, and we are fated as simmers to the Catch 22.. of should we or shouldn't we. Usually our wives settle that debate for us. Now we only need a buddy to have it mailed too.... so we can say...... hey honey, look what so and so gave me....... said he couldn't use it. Lucky me........ PM me for my name and address, I'll make sure it's handled with care...... that's how good a friend I am. Cheers Hoss

EDIT: anyone know how much winwing charges for shipping? Mine cost $300 USD in shipping to the east coast USA. Admittedly it weighs a ton and is rather bulky. This is for their $1000+ HOTAS setup, don't know about the cheaper one or a stick only.

Plus I suck anyway, and sucking with more expensive equipment will just intensify the suck. 1

Maybe...... but with that rig all nicely set up, who's going to care? With the pictures you post of it, we're all going to be sitting out here saying..... Damn CK. Said he might suck, but looks great doing it......... you are laughing, but you agree, right Cheers Hoss 2
BeastyBaiter Posted August 22, 2021 Posted August 22, 2021 Doesn't help with the cord monsters though. This is my setup:
Hoss Posted August 22, 2021 Author Posted August 22, 2021 How are the stock mounts, are they stable? Or a bit wobbly? I've seen reviews where folks said it was the only thing they were not 100% satisfied with. And how does the stick feel? LOL, pardon my enthusiasm, but I'm curios, as I'm sure everyone else is too. One more tiny question, does it sync with DCS F/A-18, like warthog is supposed to with the A-10? Cheers Hoss
BeastyBaiter Posted August 22, 2021 Posted August 22, 2021 I have been thinking of doing a youtube review of it, as all the ones I've seen were sponsored by winwing. In any case, Mounts: The mounts are stable, I have no major complaints about them. They do attach to the edge of a desk and so are only as stable as the desk is. Mine is a typical MDF desk, but it's well made for what it is. The stick's mount is rock solid and doesn't move with normal use. The throttle is solid forward and backwards but can wobble side to side if I bump it. That said, nothing on the throttle should be going side to side anyways so this is a non issue. It just wobbles if I accidentally bump it while moving the chair. The mounts do have one downside though, they are not tooless. They have a thumb screw for tightening/untightening but have a free wheeling nut on the other side, so one of the included wrenches is required. I keep the throttle static but the stick is only there when in use, it's a minor complaint but worth mentioning. Stick: The stick itself feels great. It's very smooth overall and has a nice feel about the center. Unlike my old X-55, it doesn't use a single spring on a ball joint type setup and so has a distinct center for both x and y axis. It isn't an issue to me (even with choppers), but is worth mentioning. Buttons on the stick are second to none. They have a bit of play but it's clearly deliberate to give them better feel. It's sort of like every button is a 2-stage. Probably sounds trashy with that description but it isn't. They aren't mushy, just a gradual increase in pressure until a clean break. Throttle: The throttle is also great, though the levers themselves aren't nearly as smooth as on the X-55. My only real complaint on this part is the switch placement. They are heavily spread out which makes it very easy to get lost on anything but a corner switch when using VR. All the switches have the same caps too, so there just isn't any way to tell them apart blind except by location, and as said, they are too spread out for that. Thus most of them are unassigned and are effectively unusable, this is doubly true for those that are underneath the throttle levers. The base does sync with DCS F-18 though. The APU light is synced to it's state in DCS. I disabled this since I play in VR and that light is crazy bright and always on when DCS is closed. Software: Does everything it should and even allows for lining up the AB detents on the throttle with where they are in game on a plane by plane basis. Downside is the software is exceptionally unstable and crashes all the time when trying to actually do stuff with it. It's stable when not actively being adjusted, but god help you if you try to update firmware. Seems to require a full system restart in order to get it going again. Honestly, this is the worst part, aside from the price. Shipping: Took about a week to arrive, came in 4 boxes, shipping cost $300 USD to Washington DC area. I think $150 of that was for the throttle, other half was split between the stick, stick base (sold as package but 2 boxes) and the mounts.
Hoss Posted August 22, 2021 Author Posted August 22, 2021 The only thing I do not like about the TMWH, is the switches mounted on the front end of the base. When the throttle is forward they become very difficult to use, so I use those for most functions pre-flight, engine starts, fuel stuff. I like the way Virpil puts them all behind the throttle (rear of base). I have a BlackHog b-explorer attached to my Throttle desk mount and use Joytokey for that, TARGET and Joytokey are very easy to use. So hearing what you said about software the only downside is tactile feel while in VR limits, and getting full functionality out of the Throttle base. I've seen some installations of the WW HOTAS using Monstertech mounts and they say it's much more stable especially for the Throttle, and they have adapters for the button boxes too. I'm going to watch the reviews closely to see if this is something I can use in the future. Thanks BB, that's a great review. Cheers Hoss

I have a long one for my Gunfighter Pro Mk III, and a standard one for my Virpil CM3 Throttle. Love em.
Hoss Posted August 22, 2021 Author Posted August 22, 2021 @dburne, I had been wanting a set for a long time, I finally got rid of my old corner desk (would not work with them) bought a nice gaming desk, moved into the smallest bedroom, and set it up, got the mounts in, put the extension on the stick and have been loving flying more ever since. Next, better monitor, new VGA, and hopefully VR.. Cheers Hoss 2 1

Hoss Posted January 30, 2022 Author Posted January 30, 2022 I got the new monitor, LG 32", and a MSI RTX 3080ti, and added one of GVL's trim boxes on the throttle mount. I'm following the Vario thread closely to see how it fleshes out for those that have it. So keep posting. Cheers Hoss
