Flares - How do they work?

How do you get a flare gun?

And how do you shoot it?

 

I see the following commands:

Red flare	L Ctrl 1
Green flare	L Ctrl 2
White flare	L Ctrl 3
Shoot personal flare	L Ctrl Space

 

How do they work exactly?

I’ve mapped green flares to a joystick button, this brings up the flare gun.

 

I then use the mouse to aim the flare and left click to fire it. You might have to go into key mapping to set to your preference.

TY and that worked - BUT - I couldn't get rid of the pilot arm/gun after I fired off a flare.

 

So what am I missing?

My sidearms:

 

C1 - C3 are flares and C4 is the pistol.

 

C-Tilda puts them all away.  

 

I've been clicking left mouse to fire but mapping this into joystick buttons is my next step.  Thanks!

Sorry yes you need to bind another button to remove flare gun!!! Or as above ctrl-

It's not the most intuitive set of controls it has to be said.

In tanks Left Ctrl + 5 = binoculars as well, same command as flare to put away.

No it’s not true.  CTRL-whatever to take out the flare pistol?  Mouse to aim and spacebar to shoot?  Not the most intuitive set of controls?  Get real people…if default key mappings don’t  suit your particularly selective intuitiveness, then you can remap them to whatever you want, right?  I don’t think I’ve seen a game in the last 30 years where I didn’t end up customizing some controls to suit my liking.
