I still doubt that highly. if it was dramatic and "cool" it would be far and away more likely to be saved. of course dramatic stuff was lost...but at a much lower rate than even a normal shoot down.

think about when your I phone runs out of storage...what do you delete?

I don't necessarily agree, given that gun cam footage was never meant for entertainment purposes. During WW2, it was primarily used to confirm kills, AFAIK, and secondarily for training purposes. After WW2, it may have not been necessary to confirm kills anymore, but certainly the training part remained. So a "boring" 1min footage of a well-executed attack would have been much more valuable than a short clip of a badly executed attack ending in an explosion.

There may certainly have been some survivor bias when clips were chosen for newsreels etc., but then again, how many newsreels can you fill with exploding aircraft and keep your audience interested? And for Hollywood, the quality is not nearly enough. So insofar as any survivor bias exists, the dramatic value is certainly not the only one and my personal guess is not the most important one either.

Don't bother with smart phone and a lot of pilots did not bother with gun cam and missed capturing cool pictures too.

Happy landings,

Been flying allied as of late. But heard that also.

I haven't made one happen with the .50s at all.

I've done it twice, once against AI and once against a player. No consistency to it given you can see the rest of my kills in the clips have a ridiculous amount of ammo spent on them in total. Hell even the one that did explode took like 200 hits beforehand. At timestamp. However never did it with a fighter, only HE cannons seem to explode 109s and 190s.

However with cannons the 110 is definitely a bit of a tinderbox. I wouldn't say it explodes as much as the examples listed in the OP but it definitely catches fire a lot, not that I have a problem with it.

but you gotta think what survived 70 years on. all that data pretty much became obsolete when we got into jets. it was just too old to be relevant to the realities of modern combat in jets especially when the USAF took a missile only doctrine before Vietnam. Why save videos of old "outdated" aerial gunnery when you're not even equipping new fighters with cannons?

yes, but I'd say it logical, when old gun cam footage was being disposed of due to reasons in changing air combat, the ones that were saved were because of the wow factor, regardless of how many pilots had a gun cam. We have a tainted sample source in my opinion. Essentially we have a selection from a selection.  It simply can't represent anything we can draw conclusions on.

It would like 70 years on, trying to draw conclusions on Baseball, but, all you have is clips of Highlights from the most exciting games of the era. You'd think that baseball was constant mind blowing plays, wild catches...triple plays! people drilling homers left and right! But, In reality most innings are "just another inning, no runs, no hits, no errors". Heck, the only Detroit tigers game I went to see I had the privilege of the boys playing 9 hitless innings. At lest Detroit had plenty of beer.

I'd say the same for you. fuel doesn't explode at the regularity it does currently in game. I've provided a logical explanation why I believe gun cam footage cannot be trusted as a source, as well as anecdotal writing in memoirs. To stand on anecdotal references to say make an argument that this kind of thing should happen with a high degree of regularity is a bit of a stretch. If aircraft were exploding left and right from fuel detonations obviously there would be an extreme degree of concern by all of the power that be in WWII. I say all this with the caveat that a fire does not equal an explosion.
