9./JG54Kirin Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 Greetings aces After a long hiatus my sim addiction has kicked in again. Especially with a new generation of WW2 sims like “IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad” and “DCS WW2: 1944” on the horizon along with the dawn of true VR gaming in the form of the Oculus Rift I cannot withstand the call. My current PC system is from 2009 and ran fine at the time. Over the years it got some quirks like the SSD (which is not in the list since I got it later) stopped working. Also I was experiencing random restarts and blue screens so I set it back to default clock after I overclocked the CPU as well as the GFX card. In short it’s a mess. I haven’t followed the development of gaming hardware very closely so I am back in noob status when it comes to todays computers. This is why I need your help. Does it make sense to upgrade my components? Should I start from scratch? What builds do you guys recommend? The goal is to play the newest flight-sims at high detail level. An intermediate goal will be the implementation of the Oculus Rift so multi-monitor setup is not on the list. My budget is kinda strained at the moment so I cannot got full high-end. But I imagine something in the upper third - in number around 1000 Euro / 1400 USD (for the PC only - I got everything else like peripherals and monitor). Looking forward to hear your suggestions. sop Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 The new intel chips released this month are basically just a rehash of last years I would wait til this fall if you can
WILSDime Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Hi Kirin ive just had the same dilemma as you re a new system build but mine was a lot older. My system was a gen 1 i7 920 clocked to 3.8ghz with 6gb of ram and a gtx 580 running two sata hhd in raid and this just about run BOS in high with fps between 30-50. Ive now got the new 4790k i7 clocked stock 4-4.5ghz with 8gb ram and a gtx770 with two ssd and now pull 50-60 fps with same ingame settings( I use v-sync), apart from running smoother and faster load up times in still experimenting with other games but my idea is to add a 2nd gtx if I struggle to pull decent fps in future games. Don't forget that BOS is still in development and future drivers will be released to improve gpu performance
LLv44_Mprhead Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 You could upgrade your GPU now, to something like Radeon R9 280X, Geforce GTX 770 or Radeon R9 290, depending on your budget and wait for the new intel CPUs to be released and upgrade rest of your system later.
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Yes, stating your budget will be key to what you can accomplish. There are some knowledgeable folk here but the sky is the limit as it were. I just got a FalconNW Talon with some pretty heavy duty components. So far I am extremely pleased. Also, components don't necc drop in price when the new ones come out. Occasionally they actually go up for a period of time. So, shop wisely.
9./JG54Kirin Posted July 2, 2014 Author Posted July 2, 2014 Thanks for the help guys. Notably I did what mprhead suggested before reading his post... I ordered a R9 280x (seemd the best bang for the money - also according to Tomshardware) and upgraded my RAM to 8GB and Windows to 8.1 for the time being. Once the final game is out I will review the performance and maybe upgrade to the next generation of CPUs. See you in the skies! Kirin out
LLv34_Flanker Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 S! Kirin. Make sure to head over to http://www.guru3d.com for latest Catalyst drivers at their forums I recommend using Application Controlled settings for BoS in Catalyst Control Center.
9./JG54Kirin Posted July 10, 2014 Author Posted July 10, 2014 Got the system up and running. Getting smooth frames at highest settings so far. Now I gotta configure the HOTAS and learn those planes!!! Looking forward to take the skies!! Kirin out
