A little forethought...

The following is nothing more than venting a little frustration into the electronic ether...

The last 18months have thrown more at me than I can comfortably handle, first work wise, then ongoing health problems impacting my ability to keep up with an excess of work, then an accident which briefly hospitalised me delaying me further and just these last few days major storm damage to the roof and internal flooding.... the long and short of which is I seem to be permanently exhausted, behind schedule and  I've had no time for anything hobby based including my mod work for IL-2.

Anyway the point of this rant is to say that with no advance notice I've just had to suddenly relocate my office to a different part of the building without an ethernet port to plug my PC in to the internet. Not a problem I thought as I'd an old wireless network adaptor I could use to connect my main desktop PC to the web and access my e-mail.

However in this day an age nothing comes with software on a disc to install, everything is done via internet downloads. Hence when I plug in the wireless adaptor it tells me it can't connect to the internet to download the necessary drivers to set itself up.

Not a problem I thought as my laptop is wireless enabled, I'd use that to download the  appropriate drivers on to a memory stick and transfer them to my desk top PC. However, the manufacturer doesn't allow you to download specific drivers, it only offers a "helpful" little .exe utility that connects to the internet to automatically locate and extract relevant drivers for the installed wireless network adaptor.  Hence if I run it on my laptop it detects the laptop's wireless adaptor and doesn't download the drivers I need for my desktop. If I transfer and run the utility on my desktop it tells me I need to set up the wireless adaptor in order to connect to the internet.

They've essentially produced a wireless adaptor that can't connect to the internet without having a physical wired connection. So I've ended up having to daisy chain yards and yards of ethernet cables along hallways and down stairs to access the nearest physical socket I can plug in to the internet ....

Don't you just love the way the modern world's intelligent products are designed without any forethought!?
