Reverb 2 headtracking?

Does it need some sort of sensor lighthouse? Or does it track by its own?

Hi LuseKofte.

Reverb G2 does not require external sensors.
It has four cameras that capture the space in which you move.
I think its called “inside out” tracking.

The HP Reverb G2 is a great headset (and will be even better when I get the replacement cable to stop audio dropouts) but it will need a recent, high end computer and GPU to get the best out of it. It is a good upgrade from the Rift S

Like others said, G2 uses inside out tracking, but for camera to track well, there needs to be a light source in the room you’re using it. A small desk/task light is enough, but when it’s completely dark, owners reported it may lose tracking.

 

Also in the same vein, if you’re using it in a room that gets ample daylight, there are reports of losing tracking (head position in the game jumps) let’s say it suddenly gets bright on a cloudy day as it does when clouds move across the sky blocking/unblocking the sun.

I have a 1090ti. Will upgrade it in due time.

I guess it will run well enough for me with tweaked settings. My Rift S shows age and use and need a replacement.

Seems like a rare card ?

Either way, at least you can set any resolution you want in SteamVR and scale accordingly until you get a newer card.

Any time in the past year, I'd have said get whatever card you can put your hands on. But if they're becoming easier to get, then a 3080 would suit you better for VR from what I've read. Quantity and speed of Vram is of most importance for VR.

I can afford 3090. But I simply think it is not worth it.

DCS would benefit from the more Vram on the 3090 card.

IL-2 should be fine with the 3080's memory.

I have 3070 and it's running fine with Reverb G2. It took a while to find out best settings for my rig but luckily in this forum there are very detailed instructions how to get best settings for performance and spotting. Typically framerates are in single player between 80-90 fps and for example in Virtual Pilots server around 75 - 80 fps. These values are got with supersampling set to 100%

 

Of course if you can get 3080 with reasonable price I recommend to go with that. 3090 prices are out of this world at this moment... 

 

My PC: msi x570 tomahawk, 32 Gb RAM, processor amd 5800, nvidia 3070.

I have some thinking to do. My toleranse for upgrading the rig is stretched.

I should get more out of a top end GPU than a couple of years.

Fact is flying choppers in DCS require top end GPU. FS 2020 require more than top GPU.

I have now inevitably started a upgrade I tried to avoid. 3090 no longer seem to be that far away.

I get time to think

For what it’s worth, I was exactly where you were several months ago. For me it came down to what was available at MSRP (RRP in EU?). I was aiming for a 3080, but then ended up with a 3090 because, like I wrote, it was the first one to become available at MSRP.

 

I don’t play DCS, nor MSFS, but IL-2 still gets down to ~60 FPS at Bodenplatte career with bombers and escort fighters and attackers. (High graphics settings, forgot to add).
 

Good luck with your decision. Times are sure very challenging.

A RTX 2080 Ti works just fine with the G2  with very decent performance.

The G2 does need "stations", a butt-load of bright lights around it. 

Apart from that issue mine works very well with my GTX1080Ti (at 45fps).

Oh, allow me to share my upgrade woes. I found a Gigabyte RTX 3080Ti Extreme on Amazon for £1500 (about £300 over MRP but way less than all the others elsewhere at minimum £1800), so I ordered it only to have my fkng bank do a security check and by the time I'd sorted that Amazon had cancelled the order and somebody else got it. ?

Thanks mate. Choice felt on a coffee machine for the cost og a 3090. 

Just tested it. Well worth the money.

Honestly. I drink more coffee than I fly. Being able to buy stuff for fun is a privilege. But to me there must be worth the spending. I deleted the G2 order. 

I will upgrade to a new rig on my second house when I actually have time to fly.

God knows what specs needed by then

Re: Coffee Machine vs RTX 3090, That must explain why I purchased the 3090..............................   Some of the higher end Coffee brands actually make me feel un-well. Can however manage the cheap and nasty stuff with no issues.   All that Coffee money saved must have been meant to be used on buying high end stuff for flight sims. ?

 

Wonder if I can sell the concept to my wife when I must absolutely get the latest RTX 4080 Ti++ Ultra Premium $10,000 GPU ? ?

 

No idea of the cause but the big plus of that coffee intolerance issue is a glorious un-reprojected HP Reverb G2 flying experience. ☕
