[80 Years ago today] "• The Grumman TBF Avenger makes its maiden flight. The heaviest single engine aircraft of the war, it will be very successful. Orders will exceed Grumman’s production capability, resulting in General Motors building the balance. These will be designated TBM. General Motors will also produce Wildcat fighters for Grumman, with the FM designation."
