I feel ashamed ... :-(

On my third experience on one of the Expert MP EU servers this afternoon, when I finally was able to glimpse a swarm of aircraft, and after geting into it, and trying to, with a LOT of difficulty find out the shapes of enemy airplanes ( I was flying a Yak-1 ), after engaging a Bf109 - of that I am certain - I glimpsed another aircraft leaving the area and soon started a hunt...

Approaching the enemy from it's 6'oclock, I found it hard to believe he didn't see me... got closer, closer, even more closer like never before and... Voilá! I started firing at him with all of the guns... just to find out, a few seconds later... it was one of mine  :o:

How ambarased I felt ...

Decided to crash my Yak and leave... Now I am seriously considering hard training on aircraft visual identification before going online again on an Expert server...

Any suggestions?

And soory for the guy in front of me, should he be one of the readers of this post :-/

Same thing happened to me couple of days ago, I shot down another Bf 109. It is embarrassing, isn't it... Then again, these things did happen, and still do, also in real life, to fighter pilots trained in identification. So let's not be too harsh to ourselves, at least in this environment nobody gets hurt for real.

Easiest indicator when at 6 o'clock position is the radiator under the fuselage. If there is none, it's a 109 (or 190, when we get it). Of course the La-5 doesn't have a radiator, but it has a quite prominent oil cooler instead. Also on the 109, the horizontal stabilizer is almost alliged with the top of the canopy, so when you see the stabilizer and there's only the fin above it, it's most likely a 109. If you see a canopy or fuselage above it, it's most likely a Russian plane (or a 190).

From other positons, you can check the wings (they have smaller wing area on 109 and are less tapered than on the russian planes) and the fuselage (very slim and narrow on the 109, looks fatter on the Russian planes).

The more you fly online the easier it gets to identify planes.  It just takes time.  I've passed up a ton of shots because I wasn't 100% sure.

Thx guys for the kind words and precious hints!

Will start studying the aircraft silluetes!

Don't fire on an AC until you have a positive ID - pretty simple. If in doubt, hold your fire.

Practice offline, and soon you'll be able to easily recognize the various aircraft shapes.

I did a little Google search and found this interesting image from a USAAF WWII training guide.

It might help generally speaking. Some people are more talented than others are memorizing the shapes of things like aircraft... if it doesn't come naturally then make use of a system to help you learn the shapes and make a positive ID before shooting them to pieces :)

Yes! Once you learn the silhouettes it becomes pretty easy to tell the planes apart. Just takes a bit of time.

Sorry to hear that, sobering thought that this actually happened to all sides.

Friendly fire is a sad reality of warfare. No wonder it happens in games as well as they get ever closer to the real thing, no need to feel ashamed, as long as you remember to apologize to the guy you hit right away.

Yes , no need to feel ashamed. it what we did in  Online server  -- "Opps sorry"  and learning the mistake .

You should feel  ashamed if you don't have a discipline to check your Six and get shot like that.

The distance from cockpit to tail is alot bigger on a Bf109 than on a Yak or Lagg, look at the pdf-fiile Winger posted. Now that you know what to look for, you should have little problems :) Long tail section = 109, Short tail section: Yak/Lagg.

Happens to us all in the beginning don't worry about it. It's always a good idea to msg. who you shot down and apologize.

Bear in mind this was just as much a problem in real life except of course then a mistake was even worse.

My funniest one online was to have a plane try and shoot me up, so I automatically engaged them and shot them down only to see it was another Yak...

Yep, today got in again, and although my close vision is getting really bad ( have to get new pair of glasses... ) I managed to make distinction between the 109s and the Yaks and an LaGG, I believe...

Now, it's time to learn how to fly on the Expert servers, where everybody appears from everywhere, less from where I extpected them to come from :-/

I am also still trying to find the best settings for TIR. Using Requiem's excellent profiles, although I have reverted to the previous 6DOF by now...

my suggestion is this...i as a rule of thumb do not fire on any aircraft until i zoom in and identify the markings on said aircraft. sure you get shot down a lot doing it that way but it leaves you confident on what you're firing at. and along with that the longer you do that the better you'll get at identifying from a distance by the shapes of the aircraft...hope this helps

You should have started flying on the expert mode a long time ago. I had some problems to identify incoming contacts on my long six o'clock. If you are flying level, yaks/laggs usually approach slowly but what really works for me is looking how the wings are aligned with the fuselage. Whenever I see those wings perpendicularly aligned to the fuselage I start to evade. Identifying contacts from any other point of view/angle is really easy. You will get it eventually.
