Simming on linux

Ho chaps,

Currently thinking about switching to linux, since the W11 and 'trusted' platfrom stuff. I know with steam most modern games will work on linux and I'm asusming as I own BoS on steam that should hopefully fly fine, but what about controllers?

I have a thrustmaster T.16000, a generic racing wheel (which also pulls double duty as rudder pedals in FS) and an old Xbox controller. Will they still work or will I encounter any issues, or will they even work at all?

I'm hoping some others have tired simming on linux and could give me a heads up. TBH simming wise these days I'm pretty casual with only WoFF, BoS, 1946 and Race07 getting much love from me. Although I do intend to get back into some silent hunter at some point. Outside of that I've really gone off gaming in general and havn't played or bought any new stuff in ages. Even squad and PS sit there gathering digital dust.

Cheers

was thinking the same thing when i heard windows 10 wouldn't be supported after 2025. i think IL2 is windows only game, but it could work with wine?

Difficult. Depends on how well the interplay Linux - API/Drivers - Wine - Application is. E.g. TrackIR: you won't get native trackir drivers on linux and they actively torpedo open alternatives. So you could go the freetrack route (with everything that entails) only, where the question is: will Il2 support that and will wine pass everything through so Il2 can work with it? Similar problems exist for VR headsets with their specific frameworks.

So the only real options: Go W11 or stay on W10 and wall that thing off as much as you can.

Unless of course you're willing to work with pure stick/mouse/keyboard setups, then your chances increase.

That's a bold statement; many modern games do but there are also many that don't. Many ready-made game engines such as Unity and Unreal support Linux, so all games made in either of those also run on Linux. IL2 uses its own game engine though, which makes it unlikely since that would demand a lot of development effort to get everything to work. Indeed, Steam shows that IL2 is Windows-only. You can try to run it with Wine though, which according to https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=37610 kinda works (but no guarantees!).

EDIT: lol, why was this topic moved to Suggestions? I cannot see even a single suggestion in the OP, only a question if it's possible or not. Sometimes I find the Moderators to be a bit overzealous in moving threads....
