All that’s really lacking is a British medium bomber of 41. We have spit v and hurri II as well as 109f2 and 109e7. Leaning into France would be almost possible.

Precisely because we already have some of the major types of 1941, the developers could model some of the more obscure and interesting aircraft for a 1940-41 plane pack. Admittedly I struggled to get 8 vs 8 for a full planeset, but here are some suggestions... in bold, italics are planes we already have (obviously). Something like this would help cover the western front from the end of the Battle of Britain right through to D-Day, if we include the aircraft that we already have.

Allies

Spitfire Mk IIa Mk IIb

Spitfire Mk Vb
Hurricane Mk 1

Hurricane Mk II
Bristol Blenheim
Douglas Boston
Vickers Wellington (AI)
PBY Catalina (Seaplane)
Westland Lysander
DeHavilland Tiger Moth (Training Aircraft)

Axis
Me 109 E-4

Me 109 E-7

Me 109 F-2

Me 109 F-4
FW 190 A-2

FW 190 A-3

Bf 110 E-2
Dornier Do 217

Ju 88 A-4

Heinkel 111 H-6

Ju 87 D-3

FW 200 Condor (AI)
Fieseler Fi 156 Storch
Blohm und Voss Bv 138 (Seaplane)
Me 108 Taifun
Bucker 133 Jungmeister (Training Aircraft)

I think the addition of training aircraft with some well designed missions could be a great way for newcomers to learn the controls of an aircraft. I know that this kind of addon isn't likely without a new map, but I can dream?

Happy Landings!

Hunting down V1s is what I’m most interested in. IIRC the map will also include Paris (or at least its outskirts), which I’m definitely looking forward to seeing.

Yep, & hope the arc de triumph is there, and the Champs Elysee. Nice mission: drop a French Tricolor with a Nazi parade going on. But we need a Beaufighter too!

I hope that you guys that think Paris will be able to be flown over won't make too much fuss on the forum when you discover that it won't be happening.

Yes, and even without Paris, players will very much be able to fly a plausible Normandy campaign all the way up to the closing of the Falaise Gap.

First, huge respect to the IL-2 GB team for what they've created.  I first dove into the "new" IL-2 in 2019, and I've worked through Battle of Moscow, Stalingrad, Kuban and some of Bodenplatte.  In that time, I've flown the following aircraft, each in a single Ironman Career (or for the last few, an Ironman PWCG):

  • I-16 Type 24
  • Bf 109 F-2
  • Bf 109 F-4
  • Bf 110 E-2
  • MiG-3 ser. 24
  • Yak-1 ser. 69
  • Yak-7b ser. 36
  • Bf 109 G-2
  • Ju 87 D-3
  • Fw 190 A-3
  • Bf 109 G-4
  • La-5 ser. 8
  • Il-2 Sturmovik (Model 1942)
  • Hs 129 B-2
  • Fw 190 A-5/U17
  • Yak-1B
  • P-51D-15
  • P-38J-25
  • Spitfire VB
  • Me 262 A-1a
  • P-40E
  • P-39L-1

I've enjoyed coming up the learning curve for Complex Engine Management, then adding dual engines (Bf 110, Il-2, P-38), special tactics (Ju-87), jet power (Me 262), and the different national styles and conventions of the major combatants (Soviet, German, British, American).

it's been a great journey, but when I look ahead to Battle of Normandy, I'm left wondering what's genuinely new and interesting?  Most of the planes are variants on existing designs I've already flown (P-47D Razorback, P-51B/C, Bf 109 G-6, Fw 190 A-6, Ju-88 C-6a, Spitfire Mk XIV).  Normandy as a map I've flown in DCS, and it doesn't seem like it'll be radically different than Bodenplatte (largely flat).

For experienced IL-2 GB players, what about Battle of Normandy is innovative or different as an experience?  What's going to be fresh or new that you're looking forward to?

A lot of things.

For one I really enjoy anti shipping operations and I'm hopeful than anything involving the channel will have something to do with this.

I'm also excited about filling out the roster of western front aircraft, and we've seen this already. Bodenplatte was great but compared to the three eastern front modules, the western front aircraft roster felt unavoidably barren. I'm so glad to see Typhoons in the sim now, since it felt weird not having one of the 2nd TAF's principle aircraft in Bodenplatte. With the Me-410 and the Ju-88c the axis will have some late war bomber aircraft (I know the Me-410 is technically a fighter, but I suspect it will be used as a light bomber in multiplayer a la the Bf-110 right now). I also don't think the collector C-47 would be getting made if we weren't having a Normandy module.

It's cool having an early 1944 scenario since it felt weird in career mode to go from mid 1943 right to the end of the war. This will be a nice thing to have in war-spanning careers.

I'd be keen to see some more twin engined aircraft added in the future, Beaufighter, A-20G, B-25/26, Tu-2/3 and iL DB-3 would be fantastic, as would the Do-17/215/217, SM.91/Sm.92, FW-189 because why not, and the introduction of torpedos would be a worthwhile feature. Those kind of things would be definite draws back to the game for me. I still fly occasionally, but far less nowadays for a variety of reasons.
