Tracer Bug?

Decided to dust the Spad off and join the boys for a quick sortie tonight - we got into it with a group of D7Fs and I noticed that neither my nor anyone else's tracers were showing (no smoke trails or anything...!).

Took an engine hit and decided to head home, but had a hungry D7F following me so I ended up in a scrap with him as well just after crossing the mud. Weirdly, tracers showed just fine in that engagement.

Anyone else noticed this before?

Players would need to receive data relating to tracer trails generated by all others nearby, so that their machines could render the trails too.  The described situation may be a deliberate measure to save either bandwidth or graphical rendering.

I flew earlier today and I didn’t notice anything off with the tracers.  I’ve had some weird things happen on multiplayer, even though I have a pretty good connection to the server.  A few times the balloons haven’t appeared and once an AI Pfalz attacked me and shot out my ailerons but I never saw it.  I saw the tracers that it shot fine but the airplane never appeared.  It didn’t show up in the recording I took, so I guess the game didn’t render it or something.  To me, stuff like this seems to be a very infrequent bug that is affected by the load on the server, since I haven’t had any of it happen since the Flugpark server was modified to eliminate the overload messages.

Strange! I checked my parser and see that I also landed exactly zero hits in that fight, with plenty of good opportunities (including a head-on). I know I'm rusty but I didn't think I was that rusty!

...I wonder if it was the guns overall that were glitched, not just the tracer visuals...or maybe I'm just a particularly bad shot now ?

Unless you and others keep seeing something like this repeatedly, I would just be inclined to chalk it up to a server glitch, temporarily high ping time, etc.  Anomalies happen.  And it isn’t like this this software is commanding a moon landing, so…

I was in that fight and I remember seeing bullets, tracers, and smoke trails from you and others. I'll keep an eye out for it, though.

Yeah, would think so. First time seeing / hearing of it by any means, so guessing that's what it is...

Aha! Was going to ask you (Sure it was you I went heads-up with!) but the rest of the guys said they had no issues and could see everyone's tracers just fine

It's a bug. Had the exact same thing happen in Finnish Virtual Pilots a couple weeks ago flying a P-40: no tracers, no real bullets. At one point, I even parked on a Stuka's 6 and fired away directly into it at point blank. No visible damage, no damage done on the parser, ammo ran out but it's phantom ammo apparently. It's not a common bug, but it does happen from time to time. After landing and re-connecting, it was fixed.
