Dear Pilots, Tankers and Gunners,

Today we have a short Developer Diary for you that shows progress on the Normandy airfields and the cockpit our P-51B/C.

As with our Rhineland map, the Normandy map will include historically accurate airfields. Here you can see how we match up period photos with our in-game map as we build them.

You can read the full text HERE.

Man, there was some serious density to that cluster of airfields!

By rough estimate, when we can expect BoN map?

Since the Arado 234 will appear with Normandy and the Historic Airfield Juvincourt, a very important airfield also for the Me 262, is unfortunately not on the map, is there a possibility of a small alternative?

I always wanted to know more about how they make the maps, this is very interesting.

That's a crazy cluster of airfields both in the south of England and on Normandy beach area. We are going to have to look out for mid air collisions!

PS: am I the only one having trouble going from picture to picture, I have to open one at a time instead of scrolling through?

Also the new DDs by Jason don't seem to trigger the notifications.

It's not me. It's the forum software probably. It was updated recently.

Thanks as always for the dev update Jason. That’s pretty damn accurate on how the airfields are developed from old maps using an overlay like that. Haven’t been on computer much at all for a while now as reality has dictated otherwise but the other night I managed to fire up the old rig and continued a career I had started and ended up playing until 4:45AM in VR. Time “flies” when you’re having fun in VR cutoff from the outside world - pun intended.

You can see where it should be in that screenshot. It’s not that much further West. See no overlay there hence the question. Should be on that peninsula that is East of Southampton Water.

No, I have that issue too. Also, the forum features are degraded (e.g., one page only, some buttons don't work) with Safari on older iPad, but I'll make a separate bug post.

You are NOT the only one experiencing trouble going from picture to picture. :coffee:

Nicely done.
Did you use the data I sent to LukeFF about Triqueville JG2 airfield near Pont-Audemer ? I provided high res historical pictures of the place and the buildings.
Is this airfield on your map ?

It's amazing, the french website IGN might be able to help you a bit :)

Yes, I used that site quite a bit when gathering research for this map. ?

I hope that among the paint schemes for the P-51 B / C will be the one shown in the photo of Sqn Ldr Eugeniusz "Dziubek" Horbaczewski, commander of the 315 Polish RAF squadron during D-day.

Is there any news on the German AA truck. I thought it was close to completion but haven't seen anything yet?

Yes, it was a very dense scattering of airfields on both coastlines. I've read some accounts that say it wasn't unusual for pilots to become confused / lost with so many airfields in close proximity to one another.

very nice, had no idea the airfields where so dense.

Yep - was an issue at night in Britain.

Each airfield had lights that flashed in a particular sequence so that a pilot could properly locate his home field - they still got it wrong sometimes.

Beautiful work on the airfields.  Waiting impatiently for the razor back Mustang.  My favorite late war US bird, by far.

Hope we will get an Allison engined version for the 23rd. Fighter Group at some point.

Yes, to help give context to today's screenshots, these are some of the airfields that correspond to this screenshot's location - you really had to know where you were at!

Agree - An Allison Engined Mustang would be very welcomed. But I'll be quite happy to use my imagination in the B/C too.

I have to hope the rest of the map will be as detailed.

I wonder what monuments will be modelled, probably a bunch of castles. Will we see some orchards and hedgerows?

Just a guess (hope) but I think you’ll see more attention to map details this time, and  some attention payed to unique terrain features, and less copy/pasted farm textures. Not sure about monuments and such. A handful I hope. They have to mind the budget and get the map produced in a reasonable time-frame, but of reasonable quality. Not an easy balancing act I’m sure. Remember the map isn’t a separate $80 DLC. :)

In any case I fully expect the most convincing map to date.

I hope we will get to fly over it in an Allied medium bomber.  The Mosquito will be put to good use, but the B26 would be sublime.

Yes, the thirst does increase, doesn't it?

Yes. It is very impressive density. I can see why maps like BoBP take a huge amount of resources - and everything indicates that this one will be even more demanding.

We should probably limit our expectations as a result.

It appears they are using them for at least some of the airfields. There are also ordnance land survey maps for much of the south coast - although the last survey (~1937-1940) has a lot of incomplete maps due to the war. I suspect they didn't want up-to-date maps that could risk falling into German hands. The maps were then all released in their current states after the war ended. The '25 inch to a mile' maps are incredibly detailed (e.g. track plans for railways, foot paths) - it is pretty amazing to look at. There are actually also some maps in a similar level of detail (called '1:2500' in the post-ward period) made around 1950 as well - but they only cover part of the south coast: https://maps.nls.uk/os/

Of course, we shouldn't expect more detail as a result of there being more documentation - but does give a fascinating feel.
