When can we know more about the way DM works?

There have been so many discussions around this, but mainly it's been guesswork, I was wondering whether the devs could spend some time explaining how the damage model works, if anything it's interesting and educational!

I'd really like to know to what detail engine damage (especially hit detection) is modelled.

Curious too. id especially love to know if one day the hits will actually visualize the moment they hit the plane and not much later. Really hard to see if i actually hit this way.

Since we prob aren't going to get the FW190 this friday maybe we can get some damage model knowledge dropped on us.

I would like to know more as well out of curiosity, but we all know how messy this subject can get in the forums....

lol, sorry to step on them as well but we won't get it this week. From what I understand next week would be the earliest we could see it.

I feel the BoS updates are going to have small changes each week since they are begining a new project that has shifted their priority's.

How about finishing one project and then move to another project?

I agree with all you wrote, but will be shocked if we get told anything.

that's preposterous speculation mate, so far they've delivered an outstanding product

Given that anything short of a declaration that the DM models physical and chemical reality right down to the quantum level will probably give some forum contributors an excuse to complain that the DM is 'wrong', I would guess that the devs might prefer to keep us in the dark. If we don't know how it works, we have instead to base any criticisms on what we can actually see in-game - which is after all what actually matters...

for some people a good update is an update with a new aircraft but they are totally wrong ....

let them talk. BoS is in a good way for the release in september and let's hope it will be successful to have plenty of new planes and theaters

+1 for detailed info on DM mechanics.

WIP is probably the short answer but I too would appreciate the longer version.

Indeed.

As much as I like technical tidbits and dingongs I really, really would not like to see the gongshow that it would cause. [/shudder]

The old adage that the flight sim genres worst enemy is the flightsimmers themselves. Sad to say but it still holds true...

Almost every developer is working on multiple projects at a time. They have to continually think about what is next for them as a business. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this as long as the current title is meeting/exceeding expectations. I think most would agree that up to now BoS is meeting/exceeding expectations.

A good example on the contrary would be DICE and BF4. It seems rather obvious that their attention was focused more on the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront 2 rather than BF4 which has been a broken mess of a game since its release.

Damage model bickering sounds like lots of fun.

Last time I played, I spent some time idly banging away at my wing with a flare gun.  The damage visuals didn't really match the weapon (single shots hitting in the same spot again and again) which is fine.  Flare gun damage is very much a fringe case.  Then my wing which was already damaged by a "good" landing - meaning the pilot could have walked away from it - fell off and I was a little disappointed.

It made me wonder if the wing just had "x" number of hit points and damage representations reflect the level of total damage to the wing or a part of a wing and the flare gun happened to push the wing past the brink, or if it was the result of progressive damage that I have seen several times, where damaged parts sometimes fall off an airplane sitting still on the ground after a little bit.

A flare gun will not likely cause any damage to your wing, the flare will just bounce off. Perhaps the flare itself is not considered "ammunition" and as such it won't affect the wing.

To go back to the topic, I strongly believe that if we ALL maintained a mature attitude on the topic, the devs and us alike would surely benefit from the sharing experience.

I agree - I would expect paint damage and maybe denting IRL.  The wing falling off was a disappointment.

..sounds good to me. In comparison asking for eternal world peace would be modest. This is a flightsim-forum after all

I do believe getting into this would do more harm than good, as Andy stated there most likely will be a heated discussion (thats optimistic) about game vs. reality...

come on, we're gonna have people questioning the DM anyway, I think having clarity and transparency from the devs on the way it works would only add to the level of appreciation of the product. It's probably only me, but I find the damage report at the end of each DCS mission quite interesting! It really shows the intricacy of the system!

Related question.

If the DM is specific to engine and systems (hydraulics, etc.) will this information show in the log?

Currently in the logs for ROF that the server stats show (Syndicate, New Wings) it only shows for example, "[sopwith Triplane] has damaged (0.031) AI [Albatros D.II]".  Would be great to see something more specific in BOS, such as hits/damage to wing area, engine, oil coolant system, etc.
