Monostripezebra Posted July 10, 2021 Posted July 10, 2021 Anyone else doing "Jetborne Racing", from this Vtol_VR guy? for me it does not seem to have really great or detailed flying physics... in an aircraft sense, but as cheap racing game the mechanics appear to make sense and it actually reminds me a bit of the 1988 Atari ST classic "Powerdrome". My first impression is that it is not bad for the price, despite few tracks and no varying ship options. But the mechanics appear to make sense, racewise after the first laps so far.
Gambit21 Posted July 10, 2021 Posted July 10, 2021 Looks like you’re going 40 mph through an airport overhead walkway...kinda weird.

Well, my very first impression was that I wanted to return the game because of the seemingly "slow" speed on the first circuit and weird non-aircraft like flying model.. but after some more rounds, i gotta say, it appears to oddly make sense as a racing game and is fun. AND its fast. It is kind of all about track and speed management (as racing games tend to be) and the limiting factor is G-tolerance and blackout. That was the beginners track, the other racetracks are definately more interesting looking, at least.. and it is quite hard to be speedy on some.. and the world leaderbords show some insane times, it feels like.. it also has VOIP inbuilt. Overall very neat. Edited July 17, 2021 by Monostripezebra
Monostripezebra Posted July 11, 2021 Author Posted July 11, 2021 Some of the levels are kinda amazing to race
Monostripezebra Posted July 17, 2021 Author Posted July 17, 2021 I am really starting to like the game.. its simple, yet complex
Monostripezebra Posted July 25, 2021 Author Posted July 25, 2021 I am officially now among the top 100, laptimewise on most tracks.. my best placement is 28
Gambit21 Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 I’ve only watched on my phone - but still looks like you’re on rails (no inertia/drift etc) driving through airport terminals.

If it's anything like VTOL VR, this is an optional stability assist that can be turned off from within the cockpit.

But there is a lot of drift.. the amount of smashed tails drifting too fast around the corners is pretty legendary. And it even has non-athmosphere phsyics as gimmik for the moon track: On 7/26/2021 at 12:37 PM, [DBS]Browning said: If it's anything like VTOL VR, this is an optional stability assist that can be turned off from within the cockpit. it is simplified with little to no systems to focus on pure racing. Not really a flightsim-FM, especially low speed and rudders are appalling, but I am positively surprised how well it works for racing in terms of providing a stable, simple and robust (to all netcode things) and yet competative fun thing. The game is really fun and well rounded designed. Very straight forward simple fair multiplayer racing.. It reminds me very much of the old 1988 classic "Powerdrome" in modern.. and it is kinda of a worth follow-up on that.
Monostripezebra Posted July 31, 2021 Author Posted July 31, 2021 A good race in which the field stays pretty close together is really exciting to fly..
ZachariasX Posted July 31, 2021 Posted July 31, 2021 We should have an online racing mode for IL2. Basically the option to spawn a number of people at the same time, get them in flight position, pause for count down and start, have a detection logic to remain on track and crossing the finish line.

Absolutely! Infact, I really think almost every sim (looking at you MSFS) should consider it.. as figuring out some basic functionallities needed just for very basic racing is relatively simple and low effort to implement and yet so high reward and fun. In essence for the most basic racing mode you need some form of start mechanism (ie like a central server side controled countdown that unlocks player interaction at 0 or the likes) and "gates" in the sense of coordinate pairing that clock player entities and can be chained to a track. Everything beyond is just polish And if you let them, players will just do all the trackbuilding work over time. That beeing said, "Jetborne Racing" is definately not a classic "flightsim" but it is very very good as racing game.. apart from the "mario cart" items race part, which I don´t really like (because it comes down to chance and getting the right items) the non-item races are a 100% skill based and it is easy to pick up but insanely hard to master. I mean, lap-time wise the leaderbord tells me I am in the top 100, but I still got nothing on the real cracks and the record hold go 10 secs and more faster... my best placement is place 25, but the first is still significantly faster. Yet, I still (like in the vid above where the guy that started in first is a real crack and way faster then me, but he crashed once) can win from time to time, because lap time is one thing and consistency is another. If you can stay on track for 3-5 rounds, it really means something and is a skill developable next to finding fast lines.. and the faster the line, the greater the risk. So for the racing aspect, it is really doing that well. Edited August 1, 2021 by Monostripezebra 1

IL2 unfortunately lacks rectangular/polygonal trigger zones. (finish line) DCS has these. As far as staying on track, that’s something I’d be hard-pressed to accomplish even in the DCS editor with any precision - unless it was a simple course. In that case it could be managed with some overlapping circular and rectangular trigger zones. Edited August 2, 2021 by Gambit21 1

Well, I would hope that providing some "gate" type triggers/checkpoint would be something simple enough for sim developers to provide at some point.. as there so many uses, from racing to landing tutorials and the effort to effect ration should be great. Meanwhile in Jetborne, I am still struggeling within the top 50 worldrang.. but its fun!

1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted August 29, 2021 Posted August 29, 2021 VR must be fun , tunels flights are great a like them since Amiga demo scene make them.

But desktopish, I am still enjoying the game imensely. I am now in the top 10 for most maps, except underwater and mountain pass. So I am trying to work on that, barely survived a wallbump here 1
