Hi. I own a Rift S and a Quest 2. However my Quest is not so satisfying for PCVR, compression is always noticeable no matter what (for me) to the point that I prefer Rift S for my flightsimming. I am tempted by G2, for flightsims only, and without controllers  will be a hefty saving. But I am in doubt, can I use it wihout controllers, I mean initial setup and such?

to second Don, indeed, no issue flying without them.  I've never used them for flight sim's.

Yes.

You Spartan ! :)

Thanx for your answers. I trust now that it will be no need for them, for guardian setup or whatever wmr will need (I only had oculus products untill now, starting with cv1)

The only thing that can be annoying is that you usually cannot use the steam overlay without them in VR so for stuff like changing settings in the WMR for SteamVR panel (which is only accessible in VR) you'll have to resort to editing the steamvr.vrsettings file instead - usually this is a one-off.

Good point I did not think about that.

Also having the controllers opens up possibility for some great VR games should one want to check them out at some point.

I would LOVE to hear more about this. I hate turning the controller on just to “click” on “Return to Game” when I start iRacing, which not in my steam library.

You can easily add a non Steam game to your Steam Library fwiw.

I know, but it still opens up the curved “your library” thing while the game is loading and does not close it off once the game is loaded for a non steam game :(.

I only play seated, so the only time the controllers get used is when I have to close that screen by hitting “Return to Game” on the curved steam thing.

Exactly. While playing IL-2, this appeared very often and I had to pull down the dashboard using the controller. That's why I consider the option without controllers unfeasible. I recommend you get it with controllers.

Oh, my! I was very close to take the plunge. To good to be true :)

But why did they even sell it without controllers?

Thanks, you helped me to skip a return.

I used the Reverb 1 without controllers for a year or so, and not a single problem, then used the Reverb 2 without controllers with no issues.

I use the Vive Pro 2 with only 1 base station and no controllers and also no issues.

Seems to be for flight simulators you can get away with it.

At the risk of repeating myself, I would LOVE to learn how to do that. When I start a game that is not in my steam library, but needs SteamVR, HMD takes me to SteamVR space, and then the curved steam dashboard pops up and there’s no way to close it other than turn powering up the controller and then hitting “return to game” within that dashboard.

the fact that mouse cannot be used within SteamVR and/or SteamVR Home drives me mad to the end.

My game is not from Steam, I bought it from IL2 website.

Also I covered the little square between the lenses on my Reverb.

Disable the Steam VR Dashboard in the settings tab. Then it will not pop up when Steam VR launches.

That is what I do when I am going to be doing my flight sims in VR.  Then I just leave controllers off and launch the game from my desktop shortcut.

Thanks so much Don. I’ll try that.

if it’s the setting I’ve been missing all along that will be H.U.G.E!

I must be missing it. I check everything off on the Dashboard section of the settings and it still shows up. The options for it are “near”, “middle”, and “far”. I can’t seem to figure this out.

Don, are you on SteamVR Beta by any chance?

Yes I am on the Beta.

The last selection - VR Dashboard on System Button - needs to be off.

Thanks. Beta gave me problems a while back (regular crashes in IL-2), so I reverted back to stable version

i have the dashboard settings exactly like you show above but dashboard still launches yesterday when my mom steam game (iRacing), so I’ll try it with the beta version when I get home.

perhaps I should have exited steam and restarted after changing the settings. I can’t remember if I did. ?

Yeah pretty sure you will want to relaunch Steam VR after making the change.
