photog95661 Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 I am creating a tank mission advancing on the subject village, which travels thru three layers of defense which were softened by artillery barrages. Also included were random air attacks on the advancing tank forces. I decided to add some flak unis to support the advancing tanks. In so doing, some ground positions and the flak units shifted from coloring to white and the map used to create the mission changed. Now, I cannot locate the map which contains the village of Panovo. Can anyone tell which map it is located in? Also, why did the ground positions turn white? (Also noted were explosions and tank tracks that looked like snow.) Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Gambit21 Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 (edited) Even important villages that are present, like say Bastogne are not useable for such things generally. For instance Bastogne should be the most important single village on the map other than say Aachen. It should have 7 roads heading into it, which is why it was such a strategic hub...it has 1 road heading into it on the map...it's a true head scratcher. Edited July 7, 2021 by Gambit21 1

I desired to create a series of historically based missions covering Patton's engagements coming to the aid of Bastogne. I purchased books for reference. Unfortunately none of the towns and or villages, where the battles took place, are on the current map. Therefore, no Battle Of The Bulge tank missions are forthcoming from me. This is the result of IL2 being primarily a flight simulation and apparently no regard for supporting Tank Crew, on this map, by the developers. Too bad. The Battle Of The Bulge was a major battle in the West. It was the last great offensive made by the Germans. It is too bad we TC mission builders are left out in no mans land. ☹️ Edited July 7, 2021 by Thad 1 1 1
AEthelraedUnraed Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 (edited) Looking on google maps, there should be a Panovo within the Moscow map just northwest of Mjatlevo (center south), but it doesn't appear in-game. 21 hours ago, photog95661 said: Also, why did the ground positions turn white? Go to the mission properties (click the mission name) and set the Season property to summer. Edited July 7, 2021 by AEthelraedUnraed 1

Too bad. The problem is that even for a flight simulation, the aircraft were there to support operations on the ground, these operations took place in certain places for certain reasons. Key road confluences/hubs, villages located at these key locations etc. Bastogne (well...sort of...again with only 1 road) but no Foy. Then look at the Bulge area and start looking around the Spa, Malmedy, area etc where attention should have been given rather than German villages up in the northeast corner of the map where nobody flies. Basically there should have been a hierarchy of detail/priority based on where the key battles happened on this map in late 44/early 45. Instead there's less detail in the key areas...again a real head-scratcher. I really can't relate to the mentality behind this map. I had plans to support TC too by creating some Tiger/Sherman missions with a "Tigers in the Snow" project...but there's just no way it's going to happen. A real missed opportunity. photog95661 Posted July 8, 2021 Author Posted July 8, 2021 I have found the village of Panovo. It is contained in the Moscow map, Grid 2603. Thank you to those of you who provided insight to my dilemma. I still have no idea why the map and whatever changed. I will just keep a closer eye on things while I am using the Mission Editor. 1

Unless the developers come out with a special map for Tank Crew use to cover Bulge scenario. ?

I'm not planning to upgrade the entire map (although now that I think of it, I do have a few ideas and tricks up my sleeve perhaps...) but I could easily add a couple of villages for tank missions, I reckon. 1

I appreciate the thought, but they'd have to be available to everyone. I had some ideas for some nice snowy valleys on the Rhineland map away from any villages as well, but the moment is gone - up to my eyeballs now in other non-IL2 related content/work. And they would be, you can pack them right along with the mission files. No need to overwrite the default landscape or have a separate mod or whatever. 1
