I think Steel Beasts is the best realistic tank game but it covers the modern period, not WWII. Also its graphics are not the best.

Join the Army, they have amazing Tank Battle Simulators............ who knows you may get lucky and actually get to shoot the real thing at another real tank shooting at you..

yes single player is possible.

 

There is currently no career mode as such but some official campaigns and plenty of user made missions. Also PWCG has added some playable tank missions too. More info here:

There's an entire subforum here and mounds of YouTube videos that will answer all those questions for you.

ArmA 3 with Tanks DLC is decent enough - not a full in-depth tank sim but definitely an order of magnitude above the "free-to-play" level of seriousness (you know the one I'm talking about)

 

Graphics-wise it's a bit dated, though. It being a game first released in 2013 - It's got a highly active community, loads of mods, and it still gets official updates on the other hand.

As far as SP goes, Steel Fury is still the golden standard.

I was officially bored of Tank Crew in its current state, SP and MP, a few months ago.

It just lacks polish and is hampered by some long standing issues and a lack of cohesion.
