I've never played an iron man campaign, but furthest I ever got was something like 30 missions into a MiG-3 campaign. Then I crash-landed and got captured. Although it was literally a couple of hundred metres behind the front in the middle of nowhere, so I guess in real life I could have easily made it back to the Soviet lines... 1

That sounds quite similar to my best 'iron man' experience. Landed just behind the frontline in my damaged MiG-3 in mid-December, just before the counterattack. My pilot had survived more than two months of combat before that. Ever since the old Il-2 1946, I've truly appreciated 'iron man' mode campaigns. 1
