javelina Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Hello group, I rolled the dice, and pulled the trigger. I ended up purchasing the standard edition. Prior to this sim, I've flown most all of the DCSW modules, (I own 'em all), along with BMS Falcon, and A2A BoB2. Hoping to have a top notch experience with IL-2 BOS. Which I expect to, with all of the feedback. I'll catch you in the clouds... :-) regards, -Jav 2
LLv34_Flanker Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 S! Welcome aboard. There is a lot of info around here and make sure to report bugs as well Enjoy your stay!
Pringliano Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 (edited) Started using flightsims in 1987, 7 years after having got my PPL... Used mostly civil flightsims, up until very recently. Also used CFS and IL2 ( original) as well as Janes' ww2 fighters and a few others long ago whose names I don't recall. DCS World was my re-entry, a couple of years ago, to the World of Combat flight sims, specially because of the p51d and the flight dynamics model. I give almost no use to the other add-ons and the whole set of combat-oriented features of DCS, but use it simply to fly around in the p51 and the helicopters. IL2 BoS ( Standard ) was offered by a great friend, who was also responsible for me buying DCS W, and was also long trying to "force" me to try RoF, but... combat was really not the kind of use I was willing to give to a flight simulator... Well, I very very reluctantly made my first flight in the LaGG3, then started waiting for the updates and trying each one, then entering MP and.... Well, IL2 BoS became my preferred flight simulator EVER! In the first place because of the superb flight dynamics and overall attention to detail in systems and DM ( yes there are problems, but what sim does not have them???? and I guess most will get addressed sooner or later...). Then, I confess that I have completely been taken by the thrill of online MP sessions, and ended up reading flight combat maneuvers / tactics texts that I never dreamed could make part of my reading! Rise of Flight was the next logical acquisition, and although I didn't yet find the time to start playing it, simply reading the Manual is a pleasure, and the few online test flights were.... well... simply AMAZING! So... IL2 BoS and RoF are most probably going to represent 99% of my pc flight simming time during the next years :-) Edited June 21, 2014 by jcomm 1
snowsnipersnow_sniper Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Welcome ! reading your fligh sim story is a pleasure as most of us know exactly what you mean... Procedure and manual for Lagg 3 and other plane in Bos, in full real is great fun.
Pringliano Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Procedure and manual for Lagg 3 and other plane in Bos, in full real is great fun. Where can I find it snowsnipersnow_sniper ?
snowsnipersnow_sniper Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 not real one for lagg 3 but procedure and check list on the forum http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/6670-cockpit-glance-reference-cards/?hl=+cockpit%20+reference http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/2285-lagg-3-basic-flight-manual/ other stuff for lagg 3 http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/lagg3/cockpits/cockpitlagg3.html http://www.ww2aircraft.net/forum/other-mechanical-systems-tech/manual-index-russian-36325.html ( must be logged to dowload ) In fact LA 5 manuel and yak 3 an IL2 are great and have similar system close to Lagg 3. don't have time now but i have it, and print it in english, you can find it with google in pdf or jpg. this one can help : http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/235-real-ww2-pilots-manuals-thread/
LLv34_Flanker Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 S! I would say you need no procedures in Yak or LagG, just keep mixture at 100% or so and keep radiators slightly open = good to go. I am yet to break ANY Russian engine from overheating or any abuse. Today managed to break the Bf109F-4 engine after doing a hammerhead, it just popped black smoke and died..sigh.

That's what I call realism :-)
LLv34_Flanker Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 S! Realism in what way? That the Germans could not build engines lasting more than 4-5 minutes of 1.21ata and doing hammerheads or that the Russian engines should never break no matter how you abuse them? To add more it seems the CoG of the Bf109 is at the propellor hub instead of 25% MAC. Wobbles around it's nose etc. Frustrated? Yes. Giving up? No. Shall see what the last % of development will bring to the table.

For how long did you climb? Was the engine getting hotter than it should have? DCS's p51d can easily get the engine broken on a steep climb due to temperature limits being exceeded... Regarding the CoG, how did you find that position?
javelina Posted June 21, 2014 Author Posted June 21, 2014 thanks for the welcomes. As noted, I'm just starting out on BoS. Using a TM Warthog, TIR5, Saitek Combat Rudders, etc. So I've got a bit of work to get the controls/settings all sorted out. DCS A-10C was too kind, with the plug and play of the Thrusmaster Warthog controller....
Finkeren Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Well, you have a good start with your controls alone I'm using a 3 year old busted Saitek X52, where the stick locks up half the time due to something being broken down by the spring. No TrackIR, no pedals, a keyboard where I had to reassign a lot of controls because F9 doesn't work etc Welcome to the party. Hope you have great fun.
javelina Posted June 21, 2014 Author Posted June 21, 2014 thanks Finkeren. I had that X52, prior to my Warthog. It worked great, but I did both the Magnet & Tension mod to it, which to me really helped.
javelina Posted June 21, 2014 Author Posted June 21, 2014 Pretty funky how far I need to "throw" my joystick, before the A/C responds to the command. (I saw that folks had added extensions to their Warthogs).
DeafBee Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Welcome to this fantastic sim ROF and now BOS has been the only games always installed on my computer too This game is already amazing. The best ww2 sim out there imo. I have the legendary MSFF2 joystick and using the X52 Yoke + The Saitek combat pedals. Awesome setup for this sim.
javelina Posted June 22, 2014 Author Posted June 22, 2014 I'm sure once this sim goes to "production", there's gonna be a lot of you folks out there that add some MOD's... This sim has the potential to be another classic!
Runyan99 Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 I'm new here too. I've taught myself the instrumentation on the Yak, and plan on flying that, since I assume the majority of players want to be flying 109s. I'm playing WT until the multiplayer for BOS gets filled out. One thing I have really gotten used to in WT is using one joy button as a snap zoom toggle, to focus quickly on an object, and then out again. Is there any way to set that up here too? The current toggle which gradually zooms in and zooms out is a little clumsy for me.

[JG54]Vyper Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Setting the camera pan speed to 100 has things moving quickly for me in this area. More accurately pan POV speed.
Runyan99 Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 Yep that will work, thanks. With that setting I set one touch full zoom out, full zoom in, and a medium setting at 'reset'.
FlatSpinMan Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 Also consider the differences between Pan and Snap views. I use Snap with the slider pushed all the way over to get fast views.
Runyan99 Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Is there any way to know the position of the tail wheel? I have it mapped but I don't know if a runway start means the wheel is locked or unlocked, and when I press the button there is no indication.
LLv34_Flanker Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 S! At least in the Bf109F and G there is a lever on left side of cockpit above trim/flap wheels indicating the position of tail wheel lock.
Bearcat Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Welcome aboard.. I think you will really enjoy this sim.
