[80 years ago today] "• After six months of bickering between Regia Marina and Regia Aeronautica brass, work finally begins on converting the Italian 30,000 ton liner Roma to the aircraft carrier Aquila. She will never become operational.

 

The incomplete Aquila at Genoa. It is also planned to convert her sister liner Augustus to the carrier Sparviero. The latter conversion will begin in mid-1942 but Sparviero will never be close to completion. "
