I tried to bailout today of a Bf 109 F4 by pressing the default key command Lt. Ctrl + E the canopy ejected, but I remained on board, any known reason for this. I never had this problem before. Do I need to open the canopy first, then hit Lt. Ctrl + E?

Most likely you were too fast to bail out.

Too fast, too injured, there seem to be a lot of factors that go into determining a successful bailout. rolling upside down and pushing the stick forward also seem to help.

One of the things that kinda impressed me in this game is how much thought went into the bailouts, I'd love to see an in depth review of what all factors in.

I always know when I'm bailing out inverted, the shit runs out my collar.

Slow down and push negative G as you bail. That will help you get tossed out

Kill your throttle if your propeller is moving,  then pull on the stick and drop your flaps to landing mode when you got ejection issues.

and the eject button NORMALLY overrides the open canopy part....   have had a few times in flight that i had to open the canopy first, but then you have to deal with speed issues in the open canopy command as well

On Soviet aircraft you need to mind the speed limit for opening the canopy, others have ways to jettison it.

im 90% in german planes, and the speed can be an issue at times.
