Smartphones and VR

Them quality VR stand alone units can be quite expensive, but i wonder if anyone has experiences with Smartphone VR head sets.

Examples: VR-i EVOLUTION 3.0, Samsung Gear VR ... Seems you will need a pretty decent fast phone.

 

ADDED, some one mentioned that you'd need a special monitor mode for a smartphone to be connected to your graphics card.
