Mikestriken Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 I am looking to upgrade to a 144hz monitor (getting an RTX 3080 ti soon), I currently am using a 4k 60hz monitor. A lot of people are saying that for combat flight sims such as DCS and IL-2 lower resolution is better:https://www.reddit.com/r/hoggit/comments/b2idoy/4k_or_1080_for_dcs/https://www.reddit.com/r/hoggit/comments/cgre5m/high_resolution_low_unit_visibility/https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/32425-is-a-4k-display-worth-it/ I just wanted an update on what everyone thinks, should I go for a 4k 27" 144Hz monitor or a 2K 27/32" 144Hz monitor? I have also heard that 3440*1440 is too high res for spotting and results in less screen real estate from the "High resolution => low unit visibility" so is that resolution bad? Thanks in advance!
Gambit21 Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 I read that first thread it was a total waste of time. I personally don't see any reason to drop below 4K, spotting is fantastic, but then I'm into history/aviation, not e-sports/advantage at any cost mind-set. YMMV. 1
Voyager Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 As Gambit says, there's enough variables and changing variables that pixel pitch isn't likely to have a consistent measurable impact on spotting. However, 21:9 and 32:9 monitors are *very* nice for everything else, especially if you plan on only having one monitor. I got a 32:9 1440p monitor, andy only regret was they don't make them in IPS panels. It's a bit fewer pixels than a 4K monitor, but it has, effectively, twice the screen real estate for everything else, while still running faster than a 4k. They do require a bit of finagling though. Most games scale to your horizontal window, not the vertical one, and there are still big name titles that don't support either very well (looking at you Doom 2016...) but the ones that do are gorgeous. And, last I checked, Il-2 is one of the ones that works too...
DragonDaddy Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 I currently use a 34”, 144hz, 3440x1440 monitor for flight sims. My former monitor is 27”, 60hz, 2560x1440. For me, the 34” offers a much better experience, does not make spotting more difficult, and feels as if there is much more real estate. The entire experience feels bigger and more immersive.
ragvard Posted June 19, 2021 Posted June 19, 2021 Had a side by side comparison when i bought my rig. Long story short: Kept the 1440p instead of the 1080. Looked much better, difference in spotting was...miniscule. If you don't do competitive gaming, it's really not worth the visual downgrade. 1
Jaws2002 Posted June 20, 2021 Posted June 20, 2021 Get the highest resolution monitor you can afford. 1
