I started on this skin based on this model photograph of a 109G14.

The Typical one you see modelled as Black double-chevron in white camo with the black tulip is a tall tail G-14. I spent days looking at models and profiles without finding what I was actually looking for, some period photographs of the aircraft. As I was doing the skin I was finding out bits and pieces of information leading me to make constant amendments trying to pin down what it actually looked like. Eventually after 5 days I found some b/w photos which confirmed somethings and also made clear the level of guesswork revealed in the models and profiles.

"The caption of the photo of that plane in Jochem Prien's book Jagdgeschwader 53 (volume 3), page 851, says: "His machine - according to a log book entry by Erich Sommavilla Hartmann was still flying a Bf 109 G-6 - wears a white winter finish which largely obscures the original gray camouflage scheme. Noteworthy marking ...".

"This picture pretty clearly shows both the tall tail and the box at the back of the cockpit. Although actually neither of these features prevents it being a G-6, at this stage it's semantics."

"The one shown was used for his only claim while with the I/JG 53, his 337th, 4.Feb. 1945.  It was passed-along to Ofhr. Peter Esser.  It was re-marked as "schwarze 3". "

"Erich Sommavilla said this was a G-6 which was assigned to Hartmann and Sommavilla took a newer G-14. The men were not happy that Hartmann was brought in to take over the unit feeling the position should have been given to one of their own. That why he was issued an older type. A lot of I./JG 300's Bf 109 G-6s had the battery box mounted in the cockpit."

Only today did I find a profile by Claes Sundin which as usual seems to best define the aircraft.ehw18.jpg.c9819d3dafe07092b99fc1e88efc0f43.jpg

The fact that the skin is for a G14 rather than a late G6 is really not that relevant as the G14 was an attempt at standardising all the features and modifications incorporated into the late chassis G6 airframe. Visually they are difficult to differentiate as seen from the many ongoing discussions. I may try to update the skin to the profile above which I now believe to be the most accurate and to modify it for the G6 Late. The actual position and size of the tail band is as yet unestablished as is the actual colour of the underside. Any photographic evidence would be most welcome as usual.

Here then is the skin for the G14 which is as close as I have managed to get it so far.

+1     !

the skins, the screenshots . . .  this is indeed becoming addictive

You should really contemplate uploading the screenshots together with the skin   ?

For now, I save them and upscale them with TopazAI, which works quite well

I always regret that they are so roughly done. The problem is that all my space is taken up by 3D monitors and I have nowhere to set up a 4K monitor even if I had one. I would quite like to try some hi-res stuff. I am planning on a big clear out over the summer though starting tomorrow as the the rain returns. Hmm...
